Any topic ideas? I'm asking because we're all liberals, I'm not sure how much disagreement there is. Or are we trying to defend positions we don't agree with?

Here is the 6-person bracket we could use for the tournament. Seeds could be determined by ELO rankings, and, in the event of a tie in scoring, the higher ELO ranking would advance. I made this before I knew cyber would be voting, but it does demonstrate how the bracket would work. Any thoughts?

There are topics within the liberal platform that still cause disagreement, for example: animal rights vs. animal welfare, Obamacare vs. other types of health insurance, foreign policy, etc. I'm a liberal, but I am more hawkish than many of my counterparts, so a resolution about foreign policy would be good for me. You could defend a topic that you don't agree with as well. Also, the topic need not necessarily be political, though I guess that would be preferable...

In a tie, the lower ELO should advance because they overcame a greater challenge. What kind of liberal are your for not granting the win to the underdog in a tie?!

Maybe 4 judges would be better--that way we could split them up in Round One. Two judges evaluate one round, the other two evaluate the other. I'll add you to the judging list if that's okay.

But how can you say one is the better debater after a tie?

Anyway, how about in the case of a tie, the tie breaker would be who won if only argument points are considered (dropping S/G, C, and Sources)

I'm with YYW on this. It's standard tournament etiquette at the few debate competitions where they allow ties that I have attended. But, I guess, if more of the debaters want low seeds to advance, the rules can change. As a liberal, I'm all about democratic decision-making.

I think you're clever enough to know why (1) that's not practical and (2) why even if that were the case, it does not follow that the better debater with more experience on the site would necessarily advance.

Alright, here are rules and match-ups. If most debater and judges want to edit the rules before the rounds start, that's fine. We here liberals are democrats.

Match-ups for Round 1:

2 bsh1 v. 5 Lordgrae
3 Magic8000 v. HenryGBR

(imabench and TheOncomingStorm both have first round byes.)

Rules:
1. In the event the tie, the higher seed advances
2. In the event of a tie in the final round, debaters will be declared co-champions
3. Topics may be about any issue and do not have to be political; however, it would be preferable if they were
4. Two judges will judge each debate in round one on a first-come, first-serve basis. In other words, the first two judges to vote on a debate will judge that round; the other two judges will judge the other round
5. In rounds two and three all four judges should vote on each debate.
6. The person instigating the debate should be the debater with the higher seed and they should present their arguments first
7. Debates should have at least three rounds of actual debating, meaning that if you have a round for acceptance that round doesn't count as part of the three rounds. You may have more then three rounds of actual debating, but that's the minimum that you need
8. All other debate-specific rules are up to the competitors to mutually agree upon
9. All debates should've been initiated and accepted by November 12
10. That's all folks...oh, and on this Election Day in America, let us dutifully hope that the liberals win...

Sorry if this question has already been answered (implicitly or explicitly), but are we counting all votes on these debates or only the votes from the official judges?

Only the official judges. Other people can vote, but I will only be adding up and counting the officials' scores. I hope that clarifies this issue--I should have mentioned it earlier. Thanks for bringing it up!
