Ok, shut up. I actually like thinking about this!

What is the best way to survive after human civilization has collapsed into a hunter gatherer hellscape of wandering dead and burning cities? How can someone drain zombies from an area? (Assuming the shuffling zombies, and not those running ones.) Best vehicles? Best use of weapons? If we were all in the same place when it came time to bug out, where do we go first? The high school? The Mall? WalMart? The Airport? The Hospital? An Island?

What is more important? Crop yields or societal governance? How do we begin to restore the human population? How do we prevent a calamitous drop in life expectancy?

I am really hoping to geek out here, so just throw it out there! lol...

My town was big during prohibition, so the downtown area has both underground tunnels and abandoned buildings loaded with useful crap. Plus, with everyone in South Dakota being so naturally nice, I think anyone in Aberdeen is just kinda set.

Now see: this has always bugged me. In the original "Night of the Living Dead," the survivors famously boarded themselves up in a farmhouse, and then argued over whether or not to barricade themselves into the basement, or try to get some gasoline and make a run for it.

But they would have done much better if they had just moved some supplies upstairs and tore the stairs up behind them. The zombies could have moaned and reached up for a hug, but that's really all they would have been capable of until there were enough of them to make a big enough dog pile to reach the top floor of the farmhouse.

The movie would have had a different ending, tho: a gas fire would have burned them all up, I bet. But still.

Being nice helps to ID the face-eating zombies from the regular people. I live in Galveston, where it would be hard to know who was a zombie and who was just drunk for a while.

What about the High School versus the WalMart? I say that the school has better potential long-term: it is more habitable, with separate rooms, showers and food storage. Plus it has arable land for farming and grazing. With a little time and work, it can be fortified pretty well. If the population was kept reasonable, I think the High school would probably become a decent "city state."

WalMart is great for food and medical supplies short term. But I see an "every man for himself" mentality forming there that would make the place a death trap.

High school: bunch a dumbbutt punk kids gonna die. But its a great place to defend as its barricaded by fences and actually has good security depending on the school
Mall/Walmart: Have you seen the news of Black Friday on Walmart? 43 million died
Airport: big mistake
Hospital: dont, you will regret it. Its usually where zombie infestations start out
island: good idea if the infection didnt start here

What is more important? Crop yields or societal governance? How do we begin to restore the human population? How do we prevent a calamitous drop in life expectancy?

EVERYTHING IS ABOUT SEX! Which is why high school is actually a great place to defend
plan on farming and getting water, food could be plenty in cafeteria, but just hope that there arent too many foos depending on how long ago infection started

I would hide out with a group of people in one of those superstores that have an a**load of food in them, and then defend that f*cker like there is no tomorrow because there just might not be. Then after everything has blown over, casually go out and start scavenging from nearby areas

How can someone drain zombies from an area?

Having a lot of people with you with guns helps, and if the government decides to drop some napalm in zombie clusters that might help too.... 5 years into the apocalypse though theres probably no such thing as an 'easy way'

(Assuming the shuffling zombies, and not those running ones.) Best vehicles?

Anything that isnt a gas guzzler

Best use of weapons?

Might have to clarify what you mean by this

If we were all in the same place when it came time to bug out, where do we go first? The high school?

Only if its defendable, and if so, only stay there temporarily

The Mall?

Again, only if defendable, but also if it has a decent food court

WalMart?

Now youre talking

The Airport?

No, would be way too crammed with people trying to get somewhere else that it wouldnt even be worth it

The Hospital?

Thats probably where the zombie breakouts are going to take place, so lets avoid those at first

An Island?

Maybe, only if its plausible and no other option exists

What is more important? Crop yields or societal governance?

Crops, you dont need any kind of societal governance if you only are dealing with like 10-20 people

How do we begin to restore the human population?

Sex

How do we prevent a calamitous drop in life expectancy?

I dont see how thats possible unless a very large chunk of society managed to survive completely unscathed

I am really hoping to geek out here, so just throw it out there! lol...

Lol... We are talking about billions of living corpses destroying the human race, cities lain waste in smoking ruin... And the guys immediately think about sex!

But here's the thing: sex is dangerous! 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage, and a good number of these requires competent medical help in order to prevent maternal death. That means that the partnering ratio has to be different than it is now, don't you think? I'm being serious. If we try to maintain 1/1 boy girl relationships, then pregnancy related medical issues would kill a large number of women who do not get replaced easily in a low-population setting.

Just be logical: the boy-girl ratio in a given colony would need to be more like 1 boy to 5 girls in order to absorb maternal losses and permanent injuries. (Because this is the natural failure rate for human pregnancy.) 1 in 20 pregnancies will see the mother fail to produce milk. There NEEDS to be other women nursing if that happens.

From a female perspective, this gives us the ability to help each other through maternity, nursing, and that sort of thing in private - away from men.

This is how a lot of primitive people live today - and it is a system that we would need to go back to, in my opinion.

So the girls would end up getting protected - kept inside fortifications, and not really encouraged to hunt or go out and scavenge. (This already sounds a little paternalistic.) because they will be nursing, pregnant or helping other girls with child-rearing most of the time.

So if we colonize a school, shopping center or prison (another defensible location), then new citizens could not just be accepted into the safe-zone. We would want to bring in more females, but keep the other males out. Otherwise, too many guys get left out of relationships... Which makes them creepy and weird.
