That's an understatement, although the site has diversified somewhat since I was new.

ENTJ. Weak-ish on the E side though.

Once when I was working for Merrill-Lynch we were required by management to take the Meyers-Briggs test and then break up into little cross-referenced teams for problem-solving challenges. Of course, having learned something of critical thinking in college, I was disturbed by management's impulse to herd employees into 16 little buckets. It occurred to me how simple such an exercise made the manager's job. Rather than engage an employee and make a critical assessment, mgmt. need only decide which of 16 personality types best suited a task and assign a person so coded.
If the the decision proved ineffective mgmt could blame some flaw in testing and deflect any responsibility for decision-making.

So I went home and did some research. I quickly learned that the whole thing was a bunch of bunk and essentially a modern update on the concept of horoscope: lots of highly generalized, feel-good attributes that people use to reinforce ego and prejudice.

Meyers and Briggs were a mother/daughter team of housewives who were big fans of Jungian theory and developed the test as a way of studying people using Jungian frames of reference. Neither woman had any experience in any psychological, sociological, or occupational study and made no claims regarding the test's effectiveness as a tool for occupational modeling.

I wrote a memo to my managers with my findings and recommended that no business decision be given more or less weight based on the results of MBTI testing.

As always, mgmt disregarded scientific insight in favor of political conformity.
I didn't stay at Merrill-Lynch for long and I can't say I was surprised when the company collapsed from management incompetency and is only remembered today as a brand name owned by Bank of America. Most of my mgmt. got the sack, for example, about a year after I left for spending the majority of their work hours viewing and distributing online porn.

Wikipedia has links to many studies of MBTI including both critical and supportive findings. I think any reader who evaluates the quality of these studies with a skeptical eye will find that the whole concept has been soundly debunked (although the introvert/extrovert scale does correlate to some degree with more accepted psychological practices).

In short, MBTI is more scientology than science. The test results lack any falsifiability and are therefore subject to confirmation bias. I'm not sure why any freedom-loving person would encourage corporate employers to herd everybody into sixteen boxcars, but I recommend that folks stay well away from such creepy corporate practices.

Very interesting. I believe I have noticed some flaws in the system myself, and I am glad to hear your point of view. In fact, your comment came at a great time!

I'm glad you have an open mind about it. I would encourage you to do some research (the Wikipedia page seems fairly balanced) on the subject and form your opinion after.

They're not buckets... they're types that exist on gradient scales which serve as useful ways of classifying people based on behavior and what that behavior means for the way they interact with others.

It occurred to me how simple such an exercise made the manager's job. Rather than engage an employee and make a critical assessment, mgmt. need only decide which of 16 personality types best suited a task and assign a person so coded.

That's myopic, dim and jaded... and that kind of attitude is probably the reason you no longer work at ML, if you you ever were employed there. The MBTI is a tool, like many others used in the business world, typically to improve workplace and employee dynamics, and it enlightens management in clear and observable ways when implemented correctly. That you've got the kind of attitude that you do tells me either that you have no idea what the MBTI is, or that you're just a natural-born contrarian. Perhaps both. Realize, moreover, that the kind of managerial dynamic you're describing is in no way mutually exclusive with critical, engaged, hands-on relations with employees.

If the the decision proved ineffective mgmt could blame some flaw in testing and deflect any responsibility for decision-making.

lol... that is so off base.

So I went home and did some research. I quickly learned that the whole thing was a bunch of bunk and essentially a modern update on the concept of horoscope: lots of highly generalized, feel-good attributes that people use to reinforce ego and prejudice.

Nonsense.

As always, mgmt disregarded scientific insight in favor of political conformity.

Really, they dismissed you because your bullsh!t is diametrically at odds with a proven track record of success. I'm guessing that kind of behavior was typical for you, and I'm guessing that's why you no longer work at ML, if you ever worked there to begin with.

I didn't stay at Merrill-Lynch for long and I can't say I was surprised when the company collapsed from management incompetency and is only remembered today as a brand name owned by Bank of America.

rofl you are so full of sh!t.

In short, MBTI is more scientology than science. The test results lack any falsifiability and are therefore subject to confirmation bias. I want to take a moment to acknowledge the fact that in no meaningful way has your post communicated anything valid, empirically verifiable, useful, accurate, purposeful, productive or prudent.

You should actually take the time to understand the MBTI, rather than make posts like this one, present. It's embarrassing for you.

I offered my own experience and encouraged readers to do a little reading about the test. I don't think the test has any value but I lack the deeply emotional interest you have displayed in defense of MBTI.

I've always enjoyed your forums and have considered you one of the more interesting contributors to DDO. But you know as well as I that laying down a bunch of aspersions from the safety of anonymity is always a dick move. I contributed my experience and opinion to this forum in a manner appropriate to the topic. I wish I could say the same about you.

INTP. This is actually a bit 'iffy' though, as I'm literally right on the border with regards to N & P, and occasionally test as a different type due to that. This is generally the range I score within;

I - 70-80%
N - 45-60%
T - 60-70%
P - 45-55%

the percents mean nothing, Basically each question is a dichotomy between 2 letters. So it could be some stupid question like "you'd rather plan things than complete things" and you'd get a choice between "strongly disagree=0, disagree=0.25, neutral=0.5, agree=0.75, strongly agree=1". Suppose there are 10 questions that deal with this P/J dichotomy, so each answer is multiplied by 0.1, then they are all added up and converted to a percent, like 45% for example.

So suppose you were on the fence between INTP and INTJ. What INTP represents is Ti, Ne, Si, Fe. What INTJ represents is Ni, Te, Fi, Se. The two are completely different cognitive function sets. And answering one question differently could have given you such stark differences in your results. So don't go by the online tests.

And even when you do find the type that describes you best. It's just a generalization, it's not really a scientific analysis of your personality. Personality is more of a person by person case by case basis, whereas MBTI is just a set of 16 groups, one of which every person on the planet supposedly fits into.
