Hey..... I just joined Debate.org as an outlet for possible chatter regarding religion, philosophy and other social issues. I am hoping to learn lots here, and hopefully make some friends who are as interested in this sort of thing as I am. (:

I am studying Health Sciences and hope for a future career in Prosthetics & Orthotics or Physiotherapy. I am bisexual, atheist (though follow most Buddhist principals), vegetarian and I can talk about pretty much anything.

I am a little shy but I hope to fit in well here and contribute to this really interesting internet community! Maybe some of you can introduce yourself so I don't feel quite as awkward? :P

Hi, I'm a nobody on here, so it would be wasting your time for me to introduce myself, but I'd like to welcome you warmly to our community. ^^

I'd just warn you a little, though, that the religion forum on this site is quite a mess at times, especially when a small group of users intend to preach their own beliefs rather than participate in constructive discussion. With that said, there are a plenty of intelligent minds who frequent the religion forum with intelligent discussion too, so please don't be put off by the bad apples. :)

The other forums are good for discussion as well. Philosophy, Politics, Society tend to be the most popular ones, apart from Religion. The rest have some activity, but you're less likely to see active discussion in them, although the economics forum has livened up of late.

If you'd like a little casual talk, Polls is the best place, and the Debates section is serious and competitive. The Opinions section, which is my personal favourite, allows you to express your opinion in the form of arguments. Many quality discussions have been sparked by comments in the Opinions section; you could spend some time on there and I'm sure you'll like it.

BTW, from my observations, there's a Debates/Forums and Opinions/Polls divide on DDO. Most users seem to frequent one or the other. I'm among the exceptions, though, but I just thought I might tell you that.

I dunno... you seemed to give off those vibes :O

Old users making new accounts and deactivating their old ones are an extremely common phenomenon here, and some people have repeated the process several times, so I'm over-sensitive to it, I guess.

Inexplicable... but my feeling started with your reply to Rev and strengthened to your reply to 8el's coming out as RM.

However, I've looked at your other posts and I've realised that I've only read the small sample of your posts that give off these vibes. The majority of the rest of your posts don't...

That's all I can think of for now, but I've read a lot more in the DDO wiki.

It's not very informative, but it's functional. Most of the prominent members of DDO at the moment have pages on it. 1harderthanyouthink is responsible for its moderation.

Well, yes, in theory you can, and quite a few have written their own pages. This is not the mainstream practice to add pages by any means, but it does happen fairly often.

In my opinion, though, the users who get a page in the wiki should be the ones which are at least somewhat prominent on the site. I've talked to 1harder about implementing a guideline for that, though he said there's already, informally, such a notability rule in place. In short, IMO, you shouldn't be creating a page for yourself at the moment; I think the best criterion to determine whether someone has a place in the DDO wiki is whether someone has created a page for you. (That does not apply to inactive users, obviously.)

Generally people share information about themselves before you strike up conversation so you can know if they would be a good "fit" to talk too...you know like the About Me section on our profiles? I guess it is just a social norm, lol.

I think it's more preferable to *not* reveal everything and leave certain things for when you actually do getting talking to someone.

I also have an incessant hatred of labels and people thinking they actually matter.

Hahha, alright then. Well, I am guessing that is where you might be irritated at- the labels? I don't mind most labels, certainly not ones such as bisexual or vegetarian, because it describes me. It is like saying I have blue eyes. It is a label/fact.

Oh, and trust me, there is a lot more for me to reveal. We all just reveal different things at different times. Some are open, some are private. Some are shy, some are confident. Some are modest, some aren't. Some like labels, some don't. We are all different. (:

It's most definitely what I'm "irritated" at. Primarily because labels are irrelevant in the great scheme of things--and the fact that they can never truly define what type of person someone is. Sexuality in particular [to me] is completely immaterial and not of any real importance, especially if you've only come somewhere to debate.

Moreover, labels don't necessarily equate facts; anyone can make up a label that corresponds with the way they wish to appear to people.

Oh, and trust me, there is a lot more for me to reveal. We all just reveal different things at different times. Some are open, some are private. Some are shy, some are confident. Some are modest, some aren't. Some like labels, some don't. We are all different. (:

I'm sure ;P Again though, the shy/confident or open/closed thing is not fully definable and is largely dependant on the other person[s] and surrounding environment that the individual is faced with. In my opinion people can be anything and everything.

Anyway, welcome to the site.

And the significance of those things are exactly?

I am a little shy but I hope to fit in well here and contribute to this really interesting internet community! Maybe some of you can introduce yourself so I don't feel quite as awkward? :P

Oh, and yes. I think most people vary their open-ness and shy-ness in comparison to whom they are with.

A word of advice: you might contract leprosy by going to the Opinions, Polls, or Religion Forum.

Totally, it's all about the other person and what traits/attributes they bring out--generally.

kaleidoscope, don't listen to bossy about Opinions and Polls. He just doesn't visit these areas frequently enough to appreciate their beauty :)

That, by the way, is the Opinions/Polls-Debates/Forums section divide that I spoke of.

I stumbled here when I was looking for arguments about Religion and stuff. I liked the site so I decided to make an account.

Arguing about religion online...

Yeah... there are definitely better things to be doing with your time, haha.

Out of curiosity, is this the feeling the reason for your recent deactivation? I mean, you sure are one of the prominent debaters on DDO regarding this topic...

I am the Junior Poll Moderator of the polls section (obviously). If you have any questions about that territory of the site, you can ask me. As for the environment, I suggest you watch yourself. There have been cases of harassment, sexual and others, usually by random new users. If you have an issue with a member, you can contact this guy: http://www.debate.org...

He's the moderator and can help you with any questions you may have. Have a fantastic day.

I dunno... you seemed to give off those vibes :O

what vibes o.O?
Inexplicable... but my feeling started with your reply to Rev and strengthened to your reply to 8el's coming out as RM.

However, I've looked at your other posts and I've realised that I've only read the small sample of your posts that give off these vibes. The majority of the rest of your posts don't...
Lol...
Old users making new accounts and deactivating their old ones are an extremely common phenomenon here, and some people have repeated the process several times, so I'm over-sensitive to it, I guess.

Really? Like who?
bossyburrito -> ShabShoral
a bunch of accounts -> JohnMaynardKeynes -> ResponsiblyIrresponsible
RevL8ion -> RevNge
Negroid -> heil
That's all I can think of for now, but I've read a lot more in the DDO wiki.

We have a wiki???

Yeah. It's a bit limited in terms of user pages and stuff like that, but it's solid. I wish I had a wiki page :/
