Lately I've really gotten into RiFF RAFF, I honestly think he's ahead of his time with his rhymes. Pre-hollywood Ludacris is really really good too like his album "Word of Mouf". Gucci Mane is just the best if you have sub-woofers in your car. God I have so many underground artists too, like, real rhythm and poetry guys...

2Chainz and Lil John. Lil John's 'Cooking by the Book' collaboration has got to be my favorite. I highly recommend it to everyone here.

I find it kind of ironic that I'm wearing khakis and a sweater vest while writing this... my taste in rap is pretty much the whitest possible, but w/e.

1. Q-Tip is so damn groovy: https://www.youtube.com...

"I don't really mind if it's over your head
Cause the job of resurrectors is to wake up the dead"

2. Ice Cube's "Death Certificate" may be the most hard-hitting album ever. No Vaseline is a masterpiece: https://www.youtube.com...

"I saw it coming, that's why I went solo
And kept on stomping
While y'all motha****** moved straight outta Compton"

is such an amazing line.

Plus, you know, NWA...

3. Slick Rick is a master of delivery: https://www.youtube.com...
https://www.youtube.com...

"And this is the way I have to end this story
He was only seventeen, in a madman's dream
The cops shot the kid, I still hear him scream
This ain't funny so don't ya dare laugh
Just another case about the wrong path
Straight 'n narrow or yo' soul gets cast"

4. Canibus (hat-tip to Geo) deserves respect if only for Poet Laureate Infinity. The song has five separate lyrical layers that can be mixed and matched at will, and this is one possible (50-minute) combination. It's insane:

https://www.youtube.com...

Just look at how many goddamn words are in this song...: http://genius.com...

"My body is a human machine, my dreams filter in between
Just wait until I build my machine
Kill you with weed vapour, then a taser, then a laser
Then a maser, then a phaser, then something they call scalar
"That is not dead which can eternally lie
And with strange aeons even death may die"
But why? Coup de gr"ce for the coup d'"tat"

5. Hopsin's lyrics are biting as hell: https://www.youtube.com...

"You don"t read any books or play ball.
You don"t draw, you literally do nothing at all.
Still you fiend for the glamorous fruits you don"t have, cause you idolize rappers that do.
And all they say is, "I got money and it"s stacked to the roof".
And now you think that it"s gon" magically just happen to you? How?
Your lazy *** don"t commit to labour.
You pick something up, try it out, and put it down two-minutes later.
Then you complain about your life cause it ain"t getting catered.
Now whoever tries to call you on your bullsh*t"s a hater.
You want to succeed you have to try.
Or one day you"ll get older and regret it all cause you can"t provide."

In terms of social and philosophical content, those two go without saying.

I came in here expecting to give my favorite, but now I have to pick 5? I'll try my best...

5. Biz Markie, you can tell how much effort he put into some of his rhymes.

She had 9/10 pants and a very big bra
I took a couple of flicks and she was enthused
I said, "How do you like the show?"
she said, "I was very amused"
I started throwin' bass, she started throwin' back mid-range
But when I sprung the question, she acted kind of strange

4. 2 Chainz, all that needs to be said is one word. Crinack.

3. Lil Jon, whose spot in the song "Cookin by the book" could easily earn him the spot all by itself, his other songs also definitely contributed to my view of him as a musician.

2. Hopsin, despite making a bunch of dumb mistakes (like releasing his phone number on facebook despite having a limited texting plan), is easily one of the best rappers out there, IMO. Knock Madness is for sure my favorite album of all time, but the overall body of work from my number 1 choice is even better.

1. Zuse, this lesser known Jamaican artist has to be number one. Not only does he pump out consistently good songs, but he also adds a unique flavor to his music with his instantly recognizable laugh, "poi poi", "loak", and "bullet" constantly used as part of the instrumental.

You can't mention Jamaica without mentioning its top MC, Snow.

Normal people don't listen to rap. Rap is a form of noise so I don't think it is something that someone can do better than someone else.

A better debate would be did white people invent rap?
The 1st time I heard something that sounded like rap was 1976 when Freddie Mercury and Queen recorded "WE Will ,We Will rock you! ( this was on the album right before "We Are The Champions. )
The words were not sung they were spoken. The background was stomp, stomp, clap, stomp, stomp, clap. This sound is derived from British soccer games. The fans are sitting on wooden bleachers. They do this thing were they stomp and clap to the beat and chant. I believe they call this supporting the team.
The Lyrics, if you can call them that were written by Brian May.
My idea is rap was created by British soccer hooligans and refined and perfected by Queen. This happened before there was all that other rap, so the Black people must have heard this on the radio.
As I remember the lyrics were
Buddy your a boy, your a big boy, playin in the street gonna take on the world some day!
You got blood on your face, you big disgrace, kickin your can all over the place!
This was chanted not sung.
We Will We Will rock you
