As no one else has tried, I'll give it to you, but the real answer is 'sphere' - an anagram of herpes (how global outbreak? break/mix up the word herpes, a sphere is global.... geddit?)

I don't know ireland very well.... Fairxxxxxx? Any chance of some letters?

Okay, I sort of made it up myself, but Ireland is associated with very rainy, cloudy and cold weather. Therefore, sun in Ireland equals to- "h--------h"

I'm a student of classical music. That's another clue.

Got it - - it has to be 'Hallelujah'!!
I'm so sure that's right I won;t even ask for confirmation!

Here another one that is a play on words

Gnitib that's not nice! (10)

B---B----G.

Clue to clue - the answer is something that is not good manners, and you should notice something about 'gnitib' if you take the letters in reverse order.

You're right :D Zut, did I give too many clues :P?
The answer is "backbiting" isn't it? That's so clever, did you write it yourself?

Here's my next one:
Opening a wine bottle in the very south of Ireland (4)

Clue: I hope you know your geography..

(This is going to be my last on about Ireland, sorry lol.)

Backbiting is quite correct.

Cork!

I did make up a few crosswords for a student newspaper about 35 years ago. I try to solve the Daily Telegraph crosswords most days and finish it more often than not.

I made 'Backbiting' too easy, so not so many hints with this one:

'Watchable, the novelties I shatter'.

---E------ (10). Hint - in crossword clues words like 'break/shatter/mix up' etc often mean you should look for an anagram, and that is what you have to do here.

Okay. It has to be from the word "novelties", so I'm going to go with 'Television'.

Next one:
If one does not play any of Mozart's music, their life will become a tragic mute (10)

Sorry if these are lame, I made them all up myself.

Television is 100% correct! I know musicians generally only need to count up to 4, but television is 10 letters and 'novelties' is only 9. The anagram was 'novelties I'.

Hmm... It might be an anagram of 'a tragic mute'... or something about a magic flute.... can i have a letter or two as a hint?

Ah then if you see a clue in the newpaper like that it will have something like 'sounds like' or 'we hear' in it. Here's a couple along those lines:

Animal that's rather expensive, by the sound of it (4)
--E-.
and another: Before being cooked, we hear the call of a lion(3)

You know most of the rules now.... most of the time one half of the clue gives the letters and the other half gives the meaning of the word. The setter does his best to make you look in the wrong place.

I'm probably better at crosswords than string quartets, but yotu can click here to hear to string my quartet no1.

I can't really tell if it's good or bad unless there are real instruments playing. It just sounds mechanical, do you have the sheet music so I can analyse the harmonies etc on my piano?

I'm going to presume you're talking about piano pieces. My all time favourites have to be Chopin Ballade no.1 and Beethoven Sonata op.109 but I have a load of others that change depending on my mood.

Sorry for side tracking.
