Okay, so this is actually a little old. But a democrat just won New York's 26th house seat. She is only the 4th democrat to hold that seat since the begining of the civil war (since 1860, there were 4 democrats and 27 republicans to sit in that seat).

So what do people think about this? Is it a fluke? Is it a sign?

Yet the Republicans took the majority in those same elections. Weird.

Actually, this was the first Special Election of the 112th congress (the next on July 12th, and the last on Sep 13th).

The one on July, in the primary election (it is a runoff that is coming up). democrats took 56.07% of the vote, compared to republicans that took 41.41% (with 1.41% to libertarian and 1.11% to others).

The one in September is a republican seat and will likely stay that way.

I have heard some blame it on the third party candidate. WHile this is likely true I think that we need to get over the mentality that third parties are siimply spoilers. look at the last election, in Colorado, Tom Tancredo, running on the Constitution party ticket beat the Republican so in that case the Republican was the spoiler. In Alaska, Lisa Murkowski won as a write in. albeit she was the incumbant. Also, sometimes the Democrat and Republican are so close that there is hardly any difference and so voting third party is the only way to have a real choice.

There was also a similar story to this with another Red district in New York, NY 23, in that the Republican, who was more liberal than the Democrat dropped out less than a week before the election, and all the polls had said the third party Conservative candidate would win up to that point but when the election happened the democrat won and the Republican was once again the spoiler.
