Yes, I'm sure it's completely natural to put your own life and genetic code in harm's way for a random stranger you never met.

/end sarcasm

If I had the capacity or the willingness to care for everybody, I'd commit suicide in two seconds. Human beings are built so that they only care about their close genetic relatives; strangers are of little concern.

It's a common phenomenon where, if someone is need of help with many people watching, no one will help. Yet, if there is only one person around, they are likely to help.

Plus, from what I can understand, the man was pushed in front of the train with only seconds to help him "up" (I assume this is referring to the lowered track vs. platform). It may take a few seconds to register what is going on, and a few more to realize the man needs help.
My work here is, finally, done.

Truth. I've read a disturbing number of stories like this in school. People assume (or hope) that others are more prepared, more willing, or already in the process of providing aid. I've heard it referred to as diluted responsibility but it has another name. In emergency situations involving many people, the best chances of success come when someone actively and directly assigns specific roles (e.g. "You, call 911. You, get some water.")

We're social creatures. We look for cues for correct behavior from others in everything we do, and the more unsure we are of a situation, the more dependent we are on those cues. When suddenly all norms are thrown away and chaos ensues, are nature tells us to either freeze or run like some herd. We're not designed to be heroes.

Yeah, it's called the bystander effect: http://en.wikipedia.org... . Pretty interesting.

Half that spent finishing the last text message.

22 seconds. Just count that out in your head. Plenty time.

Exactly what I was thinking. You kind of wait for someone else to help instead of being that person yourself.

There are plenty of incidents like this. People will watch women being raped multiple times and will not even call the police. They will also hear gunshots in their apartment complexes and won't do anything either. People are selfish goons.
