I'm surprised that the Tea Party doesn't support this; it's very similar to racial profiling, and the article mentions that a good portion of them were trying to commit tax fraud.

Strictly from a governmental standpoint, this does seem valid as many of them are anti-tax.

As long as they don't take it into account in their final decision. As far as I understand this only helps them in the investigation process.

The IRS said that only low level employees were involved. However, the harassment was nationwide. It not plausible that low level employees in all the branches had the same idea at the same time to harass any organization with "tea party" or "patriot" in their name. The perps might have been organized by someone outside of the government.

The apology was not voluntary. It was the result of litigation against the IRS.

The rules are that a 501C can advocate, but not lobby. There are many organizations, both liberal and conservative, that skate that line.

The article did not say anyone committed tax fraud. It said that both conservative and liberal groups were accused by "watchdogs" of stretching the intent of the law.

The article claimed the harassment all came out of the Cincinnati office, and no government employee was punished.

The IRS and all involved can take their crocodile apology and shove it strait up their azzes. It doesn't mean anything unless people are fired and go to prison. Laws have been broken, abuse of power has taken place. And don't waste time on investigations either, nothing will come of it.

+1

Tea party groups were targeted, not those that aligned themselves with said group. These groups are fairly new, and fairly small. If it is a non-profit group, the revenue must be less than $50K (if it is an unregistered grassroots political group), and other requirements need to be met.

This is no different than earned income credit returns getting specifically focused upon. Especially ones with Schedule C losses which lower income to the maximum credit range.
Or first-time home buyer credit scrutiny.

Tea Party is a group that despises taxes, so they are most likely going to navigate through the tax code (or outright withhold/misreport). It is a focused effort, and I don't see the issue.
My work here is, finally, done.

So, anti-tax groups being scrutinized before being given tax-exempt status during the application process is unwarranted? Why?

It is similar, I'll give you that.
However, I did not see mention of tax fraud. I saw mention of abusing tax exempt status, by not fulfilling requirments, like social welfare and not lobbying.

I would not call that tax fraud, anymore than having an independant contracter who is later ruled an employee is tax fraud.

So guilty, until proven innocent. I don't know a single person who willingly pays more taxes than they are required to and doesn't take advantage of every loop hole available to them to pay less tax or no tax. The tea party is not "anti tax" it is "anti waste tax dollars." Your narritive is both incorrecet and puposeful in order to marginalize people.

I would also like to add if it "IS WARRENTED" to squtinize those seeking tax exeption, what are they apoligizing for?

This is getting sirious:

1st it's the I.R.S. Chief:
http://www.nytimes.com...

Now the commissioner of the agency's tax exempt and government entities division, will retire on June 3 in wake of scandal on targeting of conservative groups.
