This is the first time in Nigeria's history in which an opposition party has been democratically elected to office. It is surprising that the incumbent, Pres. Goodluck Jonathan, peacefully conceded defeat rather than attempt to fight the results or attempt a coup. Allegations of vote-rigging, particularly in Rivers State (which voted for Jonathan), were made but rejected but the electoral commission.

What are your thoughts on the election process and on the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari?

How many responses did you expect for a thread about a Nigerian election?
I'll see you on the Dark Side of the Moon.

So much has gone, and little is new.

The news section sucks. My anti semitic thread here is completely ignored, so I feel your pain.

It has a lot to do with the approach the country take to Boko Haram. Incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan basically allowed the group to seize an entire state in Nigeria. Jonathan only seriously fought the organization when it got close to election time. President-elect Buhari is widely believed to be someone who will be much tougher on the terrorists.

The election is also important in the sense that Nigeria is a huge oil producer, and if Buhari can crack down on the corruption Jonathan allowed and benefitted from, Nigeria could grow even faster, become more developed, and increase its export capacity.

I'm sure Negroid would love to talk about it.

I don't trust someone like Buhari. He ran an authoritarian military dictatorship in Nigeria in the 1980s and has endorsed Sharia law being applied nationwide as recently as 2001. Then again, it's Nigeria - he may well be better than the other guy.

There are many different kinds of Sharia law though. Americans tend to think of it as the kind ISIS would institute, but there is Sharia law in areas of Indonesia, for instance, that is remarkably different.

Really, there is no real evidence to suggest that Buhari is still an autocrat. In fact, that he hasn't attempted a coup any of the last 4 times he lost an election seems to support the conclusion that he's reformed. He is also likely to be VASTLY less corrupt than Jonathan.

It's still crap law.

I'm just saying I'm skeptical. Less corrupt doesn't mean not corrupt. That being said, if the corruption goes away, Nigeria easily has the resources to become a global power. They just need better leadership and stability.
