It is one thing to fire a teacher for cheating but WTF is with arresting them?

For racketeering. Engineering the cheating scandal earned them pay bonuses and the like. Others lied in testimony or interfered with evidence.

Oh, well than.

I've lied for more pay before also, that one seems like no big deal. Who doesn't exxagerate in interviews and on their resumes. That sort of thing creates a slippery slop in my opinion. The rest of the charges seem reasonable.

I mean, racketeering is a serious offense. White lies are fine in the sense that they aren't worth prosecuting, but grossly and repeatedly inflating students test scores in order to earn not insignificant pay bonuses? I think that's fairly serious.

I think high stakes testing is stupid... and I think incidents like this buttress that argument.

There's nothing wrong with high-stakes testing; they're just doing it wrong.

In Hong Kong, we don't go to our own schools to do public exams; we go to other schools, chosen for us at random, where teachers from some other schools act as invigilators. Our work is scanned into a computer system without our names on it, and marked, on a computer screen, by a teacher who doesn't know us. Writing your own name on the paper is among the things that will cost you dearly (in terms of mark penalty). MC answer sheets are scanned by an OMR system to be marked, so there's even less chance of cheating by 'miscalculating' marks.

Seriously, they're just doing it wrong.

Paying Teachers based on their students grades? There is no better incentive to cheat, they should have anticipated this. What's truly amazing is the algorithm that was developed to capture them, and others like this in other similar cases.
