I guess "Gypsie" is not PC, however, Sarkozy is dismantling 300 "Roma" or "Traveler" camps. I need to check his current popularity among the French people.

Illegal camps on, I'm guessing, government or private property? They have every right to evict them.

I'm not saying otherwise. Did you read the end of the article of the Socialist disagreeing with the move?

Yeah, more social housing and stuff? I don't see how that factors into justifying gypsies being on illegal camps

I agree, and if you were to provide public housing it would open a whole other can of worms.

Exactly. Most gypsys choose to live in camps like that by choice. In Ireland there's a group known as 'Travellers', who prefer to live in caravans. Not a nice bunch of people.

What the French (and others) are facing are not archetypal "Raggle-Taggle-Gypsies-O" helping themselves to the odd chicken or doing a bit of poaching while at the same time acting as an itinerant agricultural workforce and actually not generally unwelcome.

These are hoards of an ethnic group who've been sweeping into the EU, and especially so since Romania was granted accession, and who are hated and despised in Romania where they are rightly viewed as a number of tribes, ethnically different from Romanian stock, who thrive by theft and crime in general.

We are also have huge problems with them in the UK. They have established prostitution rings, people trafficking facilities to bring illegal immigrants into the UK many of whom then have to work off their debt in prostitution and organised crime, and who generally are what can only be described as the sum of the scum.

The other group, the so called Travellers, are different.

The name "Travellers" derived from New Age Travellers who were a group who took Tim Leary's advice and "tuned in, turned on, and dropped out" and lived a life travelling around the UK in old vehicles and who have now for the most part established Eco-Communities where they live their lives often accompanied by a haze that smells like smouldering meadow hay.

Today the Travellers are groups of usually Southern Irish con artists who travel the country in convoys of usually expensive caravans (trailers) during the late Spring and Summer thieving what they can, con'ing old people out of their savings for unwanted work that gets badly done, and generally acting like the scum they are.

They usually set up camp wherever they want on the basis that by the time the legal steps are taken to evict them they will have stolen everything not tied down, ripped off everybody naive enough to fall for their sell-line, and generally predated the area dry. In addition the claim welfare payments for everything imaginable.

They loan children between families to screw cash from welfare officials, they claim for family they support (usually non-existent but they produce paperwork proving they're telling the truth – which is a thing they mostly don't even know how to spell) and we are stupid or PC enough to fall for it.

Then when the weather turns they park up their ‘vans and go home usually to big detached houses in Eire that WE, the British tax payers pay for.

Small wonder we call them "pikies". But fo course we dare not in public because by some idiotic bit of legislation these low life dregs have gained a "racial" identity, even the word "gypsy" is fraught which is why you'll see them referred to as "Travellers".

So if you read about a crack down on Gypsies in France it should read crack down on gangs of criminals from Romania and Ireland.

Good on him.
I am voting for Innomen because of his intelligence, common sense, humility and the fact that Juggle appears to listen to him. Any other Presidential style would have a large sub-section of the site up in arms. If I was President I would destroy the site though elitism, others would let it run riot. Innomen represents a middle way that works, neither draconian nor anarchic and that is the only way things can work. Plus he does it all without ego trips.

No they don't. The bona fide call themselves Roma or I think Diddycoit.

And the problem in France isn't Travelers, the problem is Romanian gypsies.

My gypsy friend refers to himself as gypsy so does his mother. The gypsy's I have worked with in the past call themselves Gypsy. The Gypsy leader of a nearby council called himself gypsy. The largest gypsy encampment in Europe down the road from me refer to themselves as gypsies. The gypsy council of Great Britain calls themselves gypsies, the gypsy council of england calls themselves gypsies.

Further to what Zeitgeist, Panda and Badger have already noted, the Roma are the true "gypsies", those who originated in India and settled all over Europe, but many of whom spent many generations in Romania before moving on.

"Travellers", pejoratively known as "Pikies", are Irish itinerant travellers who often run travelling fairgrounds but are also associated with petty crime and anti-social behaviour. There are very many of them in England as well as Ireland.

The ones in France are "les Gitanes" (a famous brand of French cigarettes is named after them). I believe they are more akin to the Irish Travellers rather than the, arguably, more romantic Roma though.

My car broke down next to one of their encampments in the middle of the French countryside once. I had to sit there with them all crowded around it for two and a half hours until a recovery vehicle arrived. It was all I could do to stop them completely stripping the car for spare parts!
