Even after saying he would not resign, and after being elected to a fifth term despite the 14 arrests and indictments on corruption and racketeering conspiracy charges - including nine FIFA officials, Sepp Blatter resigned from his position of President of FIFA.

This is probably due to reports that Blatter's right hand, Jerome Valcke - FIFA's Secretary General, was aware and even directly involved in the events that lead up to South Africa being awarded the 2010 World Cup. The evidence was, indeed, rather damning - https://pbs.twimg.com...

He will serve as the President until a new one is elected, and he has encouraged FIFA to organize an extraordinary congress to elect one as soon as possible - and it is estimated it will be between December 2015 and March 2016. The next ordinary congress would be on May 13, 2016.

And Switzerland is launching investigations into the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar, respectively. The former, if found to be brought on through bribery, will have little to no chance to be overturned due to the time a new host would have to prepare for the World Cup. However, the latter would probably still be able to be overturned.

Excellent news indeed. I sincerely hope Qatar loses its right to host the 2022 WC. Nothing about it seems right, particularly not the winter schedule.
