For the first time, the World Bank, using an updated international poverty threshold of $1.90 (USD) estimated that the percentage of people globally living in poverty has sunk below 10%. They believe that 9.6% of the world's population now lives under that standard of poverty, as compared to 12.8% in 2012 and 37.1% all the way back in 1990. The World Bank is, understandably, incredibly optimistic about this finding. Jim Yong Kim even claimed that this data indicates we "are the first generation in human history that can end extreme poverty."

Further uplifting is that this data accounts for the growth in the world population.

The UN plans to eliminate extreme poverty (under the older estimate of $1.25 USD per day) by 2030. Now that extreme poverty has, for the first time ever, become a single digit number, that goal is closer than ever.

Now, not everything is utopian just yet. The data unfortunately excludes much of the Middle East due to all the political instability in the region. But both South and East Asia have seen marked drops in the percentage of their populaces living in poverty, and even sub-Saharan Africa has gotten a little better (from just over 50% of the population earning less than $1.90 a day in 1990 to 35.2% in 2015). While the numbers could be (indeed, are) slightly off due to the exclusion of the Middle East (which still suffer from a high rate of youth unemployment), the Middle East alone is insufficient to negate the entire trend. Global poverty is waning.

Obviously, there's still a lot of work to do, and reducing or eliminating extreme poverty doesn't erase poverty altogether. Poor and impoverished people will continue to suffer. But I believe we should look at this with a note of optimism. This is a breakthrough, a major accomplishment, and all of humanity has cause to celebrate this. Not all news has to be dark or depressing. Let's share this little moment of goodness as a reminder that human beings are a species who look toward the future to watch the sunrise no matter how many clouds are in the sky.

This was...nice. I appreciate having something to smile about for once, even if there is still much work to be done.

You smile about killing people, but not about world poverty falling below 10%? That sounds like the average American movie-goer.

Yes but it's a specific part that was replying to your "not doom and gloom" post. The last minute and 30 seconds.

Come on. This is a definite sign of progress. Even if things slip backward, this time and this moment will still be positive.

The problem here is that the decline in world poverty has been due almost entirely to China. Everywhere else, poverty has held constant or even increased.
