This has probably not even been a problem for most people here since this site is majority American, but your border patrol officers are f*cking nazis. I was on a bus from Montreal with my American bf going to New York when we got stopped at the border crossing(you know, typical procedure). We both had all our appropriate travel documents when they checked and were asked a few questions, but we were both removed for further questioning. This eventually led to an extensive search through all our luggage and me being finger printed and photographed. I was finally escorted back to Canada(my bf came too since he didn't want to leave me alone despite being allowed in the US, being a US citizen). Once we arrived back at the Canadian side they asked us like three or four questions and allowed us though. This even happened to him while entering Canada alone, we're so much more lenient here.

So yea, US border patrol officers are nazis and Canada probably only has them because the US does. F*ck your gestapo, I'm staying away from the US border for awhile.

We're happy to sacrifice our dignity for protection from Canadiens. I'm pushing for full-cavity searches at the border. Bend over and give me two good coughs. Better make it three coughs on the Mexican border...

So them damn Canadians are at it again eh? First INH tries to breach the border, next thing ya know the whole lot o' them moose ridin' hockey stick waving Canucks will be invadin' Vermont or somethin'. Good for our men in...whatever color they wear, they're the only thing standin' between us and curling as our national sport.

Damn Canadians, when will they learn.

Hard to make an opinion without knowing the questions or answers given.

Also, that actions of a few don't really speak for all. I could give examples of Canadian border potrals that were just as ruthless (and in a stupid way). My aunt lives in Canada and tried to come to the US once, but forgot her papers, so we didn't let her in (understandible, she didn't have any documentation on her), but Canada wouldn't let her back in on their side either, because she didn't have papers, even though she just came from that side 15 minutes before hand. She ended up stuck at the border until a friend drove down her papers for them to let her back in.

I know as an American it just became a law in the past few years that we are required to have a passport to get into Canada. But ya the American boarder always seems a lot a worse. I'd rather get through the boarder in under 6 hours. Even if that means risking the entrance of terrorists who've disguised themselves as three generations of mid-western farmers that just spent a week fishing lake kishkutena. What can I say, I'm a big risk taker.

That's really weird. When my family drives across the border we never encounter a problem. They don't check anything. The border patrol makes a couple of jokes with us and then let us right through.

However, when I went to Buffalo with my boyfriend (at the time), his sister and his mom, they gave us the third degree. His mom is white, but they have an Indian last name (because of his father). I thought maybe they were profiling...

That's an insult to the Nazis. The US Border Guards lack the necessary passion or craving for domination that is inherent in a Nazi. :P

That would be infuriating to me to make a decision to not travel based on this reasoning. You're not one of those 'I give away my human rights in exchange for protection' people are you?

I'm not going near there again, no, at least not for awhile. And yes, there are certain things you must give up in exchange for protection imo.

wait wait wait.

They let you, YOU and your boyfriend of all people, walk away alive, and they are nazis? ^_^

They might be many things but I dunno if that's quite consistent with nazism.

The Gestapo wouldn't bother interrogating past "Are you a Jew?" Interrogation over if you don't deceive them :P.

I really don't think it was because they were profiling. They just did their usual procedure and because I'm unemployed and living off government aid they found me suspicious.

well... that's profiling too..

It might have been a random search, which means you were randomly selected to be scrutinized more heavily. This happens on military installations and the border. It's all about appearances to create the impression that they aren't a soft target.

Nah, I really doubt it was random. It just started with the simple questioning and even during that they seemed to be suspicious.

They denied her entry because they arbitrarily determined that they didnt have enough evidence to believe she was planning to return to Canada. That itself is kind of ridiculous: I thought this was the land of opportunity. Why should it care if she doesnt want to return? They should be happy we are getting a new member of our nation.

That said, she wasnt planning to stay more than 2-4 weeks. And after this, I dont think INH would ever want to move here. I actually briefed her on the standard procedure, but we forgot to ensure our story was coherent (we werent lying, she was just confused on the details). I also forgot that it is recommended to have a return ticket, but thats partially because we didnt know if she would return in 2 weeks or 4.

For the record, Amtrak is easy to cancel if you buy your tickets online. There are three border crossings available: Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. If you are unsure about plans, you can always book a ticket there and cancel it later, with no charge (usually). Just make sure you bring the printout that shows it.

I made some other errors while there. Not asking why specifically she was denied, not asking to speak to the backroom "supervisor" who denied her entry, not pushing harder on getting let thru if we booked a return trip for her (there was a bus due in 6 hours later), etc… I also should have followed her when she was taken away (I thought they planned to interrogate us separately to find any discrepancies) -- all the abuse possibilities. For that, INH, I am sorry to have neglected my duty to watch over you. Also, other details that would have shown she would be cared for in the US (unemployed, plus on govt welfare = how is she going to get food) and that she had stuff back in Canada that she would want to have if she were moving here. I expected us to get thru with a little hassle, so I didnt think of every possibility.

As to the suggestions of being flagged by name/"ethnicity" or random selection, I am doubtful. We blew it about 5 seconds in, and thats usually when they determine your eligibility (very quickly). The rest of the show is just for show really.

They cleared me to enter and were surprised when I refused to leave her on her own. That just shows what horrible people implement this whole charade.

It was quite a traumatic experience and will only encourage me to cross unannounced from now on, if possible (I lack a license, so that is difficult for the time being). Clearly, following the "law" is not what they want you to do.

Now, INH doesnt want to come to the US. This story has to have happened thousands of times already. Fighting a vague and minimal threat, we have denied the US economy billions in trade and tourist dollars. More lives have been ruined than terrorists could ever hope to ruin. And then the whole drug war crap. We can end smuggling concerns in about five minutes by legalizing marijuana.

I plan to contact one or both of my senators to complain about all this. Its absolutely ridiculous what happened to us. I also think I will call Greyhound to say I can no longer use them because the security is too tight for my comfort. That leaves me with Amtrak, since I try not to fly and it often is too expensive.

Honestly, I no longer have any faith in the US. I am tempted to move to Canada or elsewhere. But on the other hand, I feel I should stay and work to end all these idiotic government policies (all of them?).

More to come as I remember it...

Oh yeah i meant to say that when I got thru the border. "I just got thru and it took literally 5 minutes, even answering questions about INH" The process was completely different and perhaps the randomness is which jerkoffs you get.
