This is for people who like to travel... Tell us the places we must go, the things we must see/do, were we must shop, and the foods we must eat if we travel to your hometown. (You can always come back and add to it later.)

Great idea, nonentity.

I'm going to have to do a massive one for NYC lol. I will have to even break it down by burroughs... maybe Kleptin and mattrodstrom can help me?! I'll take Brooklyn, Staten Island and Manhattan if nobody else wants it. Kleptin's got Queens. Anybody from the Boogie Down? I'll also do one about New Brunswick, New Jersey. Not that anybody wants to go to Jersey. As for my first, bear with me - it's a small, midwestern (but decent) college town.

DeKALB, ILLINOIS

Places to go:

- The House Cafe (awesome local cafe/venue/hang-out!) http://www.thehousecafe.net...
- Otto's (grungy bar venue; big names play there sometimes) http://www.ottosdekalb.com...
- The Rock Barn (old several story barn house converted to music venue) http://www.flickr.com...

Things to see/do:

- Check out NIU's campus (the lagoon, castle and observatory are pretty at least) http://www.niu.edu...
- Explore nearby Hopkin's Park (it's pretty nice I guess...) http://www.dekalbparkdistrict.com...
- Catch a show at the Egyptian Theater http://www.egyptiantheatre.org...
- Check out the Farmer's Market (summer-fall) http://www.dekalbfarmersmarket.com...

SHOP!

Tons of thrift stores in the downtown area...

- Moxie! (hands down the store with the coolest stuff lol) http://www.shopatmoxie.com...
- From the Heartware (smoke shop/hippy stuff/ lotsa cool items) http://www.facebook.com...

The downtown also has tons of specialty stores:

- Bliss Beads (beads/jewelry) http://www.facebook.com...
- North Central Cyclery (bikes) http://www.northcentralcyclery.com...
- etc.

Food to eat:

- Hibachi/Sushi @ Fushi Yami http://www.fushiyami.com...
- Breakfast @ Egg Haven (best french toast ever!) http://www.menuism.com...
- Cozy/Upscale German @ The Hillside (Vi works there :P) http://www.hillsiderestaurant.com...

Sounds good. You'll like Chicago - it's just like NYC except way smaller, way cleaner, prettier and smells better.

Great post, Danielle. I'm really looking forward to the New York posts.

And to clarify, my post was about Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Nice! There are a ton of things I missed on my list but when it gets closer to the date, let me know. Toronto is my favourite city (of course I'm a little biased) and I really hope you enjoy it. If you come at the end of July and you like reggae/soca Carribana is a great festival too.

I've lived so many places, I wouldn't know where to begin. As it turn out, I'm moving to Austin, TX in 2 weeks. Perhaps I'll ressurect this in a month or so and write up a critique on it.

I'll write one on my hometown, Miami, FL.

1. It's obnoxiously hot.
2. It's obnoxiously humid.
3. It's exceptionally violent.
4. It has to be the most materialistic place on earth (even over NYC or LA)
5. The women are stuck up and not very approachable.
6. It's so multicultural that you're no longer living in the US.
7. It's outrageously expensive
8. If you don't have a car, you're S.O.L.
9. It's a foot above sea level which means that one day (sooner than later, most likely) it WILL be underwater again.
10. It's prone to hurricanes.
11. There are a lot of dangerous animals everywhere.
12. It's the only large city in America where there is nothing to do in Downtown at night. There is almost no nightlife in downtown, it's everywhere else.
13. Little Haiti
14. Little Havana
15. Little Vietnam
16. The Russian mafia
17. The Cuban mafia
18. Drug wars
19. Hundreds of ghettos
20. Smash and grab robbery capital of the world
21. Terrible real estate bubble.
22. Ranks 9th on the Misery Index

Oh, some good points?

It's still better than Detroit!

Uhhhhhh, property taxes aren't

I could go on a tangent about how American is always portrayed as "white" and its social implications but... meh. Lol. I will say though that the U.S. has been a multi-cultural melting pot (at least where I'm from) for quite some time now :P To me that's normal; certainly not a negative.

The best thing about Sacramento is that it's close ("a midway point") to other desireable hotspots without actually having to pay desireable hotspot money to live in those desireable hotspots. :P

...? More info, please!

A couple summers ago I went to Bakersfield and we drove to Hollywood and Burbank. It would have been nice to know the places to go.

And if anyone knows anything about Atlanta, Georgia, that would be great :)
