This was the only one I disagreed with, and in fact found funny. There is no such thing as pretentious diction, only pretentious people. We have words to better convey more complex thought. The people, rather, who are verbose with the purpose and intent of appearing lofty and intellectual are pretentious, but we must distinguish them from those who are verbose in a genuine effort to convey complex thought. By that, it is not the words that form pretentious air, but rather how and with what motive those words are said.

Hmmm..."diction" is characterized as "style of speaking or writing as dependent upon choice of words"...Pretentious refers to the style of the diction (i.e. in the use of longwinded syntax, verbosity, and so on).

I liberally make use of all of these techniques when engaging in communication. Not out of genuine pretentiousness, but because I find the creative and unnecessarily complex use of language to be humorous. Plus, it is always funny when someone is confused by your language, and responds as if they understood it.

The member "racist" was especially entertaining in his use of the English language. Most of what he said flew right over the heads of the people who took offense to him.

An unfortunate side effect of this is that people will think you do a lot of drugs.

13. The Modernist movement**

Judging by the other things you listed, I'd say you are thinking of the "post-modernist movement", which I agree is a crock of sh!t, and frighteningly ignorant.

1. Popsicle sticks and those little wooden ice cream spoon (the feeling of wood against my teeth/gums is unbearable)

2. Beets

3. Capitalistic externalities (time to derail thread). Like how many things aren't standardized. Everybody makes their own unique thing so we have to make a million different sizes and shapes of everything. I want a handle for this door we just installed; turns out the company has its own, non-standardized handles that are conveniently in the $3-400 range. Every car company has its own parts as well. Things could be so much cheaper and easier... Competition also keeps intellectual property locked up and incentivizes unemployment. It's a cold world when I can't even walk into an operation and say "I'd like to help." There are risks of employing people so we've got to play this "you need experience in order to get experience" game.

Things that annoy me:
calling a company and going through menus then passed on to one person to another, that is if you get a real person on the other end.

Bad pens.

dead batteries

shallow and pretentious people

Mean people.

People who chew gum

People who slurp their coffee

People who talk too much

There's probably more, but those are the things during the day that annoy me.

What about people who think using facebook strategies to other sites will help determine how people are like (i.e. looking at someone's summaries on DDO and thinking he can decipher their personalities and character)....?
