So for one of my classes my teacher uses blackboard to post all the grades so I was able to calculate my score early and I got a 89.5! So fricken annoyed. Half a point away from getting an A-. But possibly not. Does anyone know if they round of the answer? If that's the case, I should get a 90 which would be amazing since it would mean I was .1 points off from getting a B+ yikes. But otherwise, yeah I'm pissed.

85% of the time grades are rounded up. Depending on the grading scale you use, I'd say that your grade will round up to a 90. I know that feeling when your so close to that A, for me I had an 89.6 average which was rounded up to a flat 90.

My first semester of college, I got all A's except for my Calculus class. I got an 89.8 or something like that, and it showed up as a B on my final grade. That was many years ago, and I still haven't gotten over it. I could've had all A's that semester.

Holy fvck! I was homeschooled but my mom had A's start at 95%. Most classes I've taken since high school have A's starting at 93%, anywhere from 90% to 95% though. But my English professor used to round grades up a bit if you had good attendance, I've seen other teachers do that as well.

the exams are probably more difficult as well. In engineering classes, If you get a 60, that's about average. I remember in one of my classes (professor was a douche) the class average was somewhere in the low 20s.

Oh. Good point. In one of my classes the average for the last exam was about 55% and that was a huge improvement. In that case, a 90% being an A would seem to make more sense.

It's just a number. Trust me, any teacher can make a test where theres almost no chance of you answering 10% of it. It's all arbitrary just like anything else in life. No guarantees.

You sure grades aren't rounded up 84.9% of the time?

I've always wondered... how does somebody ever manage to get lower than an A? Do you have to purposefully try to make a mistake?

I used to wonder that. Then i started a semester with more credits than ever before, working 20+ hours a week, and dealing with a lot of personal issues. Almost got kicked out of the house the day before an exam worth almost half the grade for a class. So now i'll have a lower average for the semester than one would have expected. There's just a lot that goes into what grade you get, perhaps much more than there should be but that's life.

Not to mention some people are just not that bright or won't work on things until they get it. That's a problem.

I don't understand your math.

Regardless, when I was in college, they rounded up. I am not sure why I know this, perhaps from a midterm grade, as I had a 4.0 and I think my lowest grade was around 94%.

Personally, I would not round up. If 90% is an A-, and you had 89.8%, you did not reach your goal. This is true in the real world: if you are a manager, and to get a bonus, you need to increase productivity 20%, and you only increase it by 19.6%, will you get the bonus? No, you didn't meet the goal.
My work here is, finally, done.

Who cares about grades? What do they affect? Certainly not your college of your future. I'm glad I'm not spending my time over ridiculous things like this.

It can affect your college and therefore future if you are trying to get into a major university straight out of high school.

Or you could just do what I did and never take the ACT's or SAT's, go to a community college for all your gen ed's, do an excellent job (which isn't too hard, they might as well call community college 13th grade), and then apply to the college using your grades at the community college. Easy peezy... and WAY cheaper and less stressful...

Hmm your grading system is different than ours. That sucks though. I got 89.5% in a fourth year University course in Counselling and Psychotherapy. For us, 90% is an A+. In addition, my professor that conceded to giving me a few extra marks on my exam, and had asked me to email her to remind her. I didn't bother to because I didn't think it would make that much of a difference. Well, it cost me an A+.

In my experience, teachers have never bumped grades up, especially if it was a final grade. For an assignment, maybe. But not for your final grade.

Yeah, I'm wondering how easy your tests are for an A to be 90+. In my first year Psych course, you required a 50% to pass (D), but in order to take any future classes, you needed 60% (C), which meant really, a C was a pass. Our class average was 58%, with our marks bell curved.
