So, I'm screwed. I just realised I need to write an entire paper ( the first draft) in two days. I have today to complete it, because we are supposed to present it tomorrow and stuff, so no time tomorrow and day after. I'll reach home by 7, and my laptop ran out of battery, so there's nothing for me to do right now except freak out a little.

Has anyone here ever pulled an all nighter? Is there some trick or something? Because I confess, I usually can't go without 8 hour sleep, and I slept 4 hours today, so am already a little frizzled. I have heard of a 45 minute work 15 minute rest thing, does that work? Anything else that works for you?

Coke. And by that I mean coca-cola. When I drink it I just find it very very hard to sleep, too much sugar or something? Drinking a 2l bottle over time...

I have a messed up sleep schedule, so I may be wrong.

I've pulled a few, for reasons other than academic :P

My suggestion is simply, caffeine, but not too much at once. Just a constant flow of caffeine. If you do it all at once, you'll just be really jittery and hyper for a few hours, followed by being really tired and crashing. I have found that a constant stream of caffeine, not too much at any given time, works best. I prefer Mountain Dew, Mountain Dew Kick Start, or Amp to be the best, as they aren't as caffeinated as Monster or Red Bull, but they get the job done and you don't feel like having a heart attack after a few of them. Last time I pulled one, I had an Amp, 2-3 Mountain Dews and some coffee and I made it through without any real problems till 6-7 AM.

As for working then sleeping, I guess it depends on the person, but for me personally, when I'm asleep, I'm asleep. If I were to do the 45 minutes of work, 15 minute sleep, I'd probably give up after 2-3 cycles and just go to sleep. I'd just stock up on some caffeine and sugary treats (no reason not to pig out once in a while) and get to work :P

I've done it plenty of times. It's easy if you're staying home, but the difficult part is getting outside after pulling an all-nighter. It's a nightmare.

Coffee is the best tool for this. You can adjust the amount of sugar intake, unlike if you drink most energy drinks and sodas. Drink it over say, an hour an a half. Get plenty of it.

Some exciting music and fresh air helps.

If it's anything like when I was still in school there should be a guy name Richard in your dorm who sells a study aid called a "black beauty", with a couple of those you can pull an all weeker.

I'll keep that in mind, Richard.

The Blunt Truth:

There is really only one way to actually pull an all nighter without passing out from exhaustion the next day if you are not accustomed to unconventional sleeping schedules, and that way is probably illegal for you.

The only way to do it is to take a prescription amphetamine (adderall, concerta, etc.) in the evening to keep you awake, and another the next day to ensure that you stay awake. If you don't have a prescription, it is illegal. There are a litany of other reasons why it's unsafe -and probably stupid.

Here are a few of them: managing your time is key. If you prudently manage your time, then you don't put yourself in a situation where you need to take "study aids" to facilitate your being awake and alert over prolonged periods of time. Does that help you now? Probably not... but it's an important lesson to learn in college.

Also, most colleges consider academic doping to be an honor violation. Some will even kick you out if you get caught... But, what you can do is ask for an extension on papers. Be honest with your professor and explain that you made a mistake and because of that you need a few extra days, if that is possible. If I was your professor, I'd grant the days only if you accepted responsibility for making the mistake. If you tried to come up with some bullsh!t reason why you couldn't make the deadline, I'd probably say "Sorry! C'est la vie!" and then laugh.

Now, taking excessive amounts of caffeine is stupid, for a series of reasons: (1) you risk caffeine intoxication, (2) you risk irregular heart beats, (3) it will not necessarily keep you awake, (4) even if it does keep you awake, you will be so jittery while being tired simultaneously that you will be unable to focus.

So, don't be stupid: don't OD on caffeine or take amphetamines that aren't proscribed to you. In the future, manage time better.

Relax man...you will be fine.

For me, I use 5 Hour Energy. They work for me way better than energy drinks.

I would buy 2. I would not drink right away. Wait until you get an idea already, and start drinking once you are typing. When you start getting tired, start slowly sipping them. You should be focused an working fast through the night.

Around 6am-7am I would lay down and take a break for an hour and a half(you may sleep or not, but the break should be helpful)

Then, get up, down the rest of your 5 hour energy, and finish the paper.

I have pulled all nighters in the past. The trick for me is the 5 hour energy and the break/nap around 6am.

Hope that helps!

Also, for me, I cannot do it on just caffeine. For me, 5 hour energies are preferred, but energy drinks work way better than coke/coffee.

People actually have to try to pull an all nighter? I don't even decide to do it half the time, it just kinda happens.

I never understood how it was possible. I can't even function the next day even if I just stayed up for the heck of it and did nothing. It's insane how people can go for days without sleep.

I can easily do it. Maybe it's cause I've been to many Marine camps. I'm going to Paris Island come March.

Having dated a girl in a different timezone for years, all nighters became second nature. I was one of the lucky ones in college in this regard. For me, snacks (filling and not-too-sugary), plenty of fluids, music, and a cool shower half-way through sufficed. Whenever possible, working with someone else is a benefit.

Take many caffeine pills. It's virtually impossible to die from a caffeine overdose so just keep on taking more once you feel tired. They're also really cheap compared to buying coffee.

I wrote a 24 page paper in 24 hours. I was quite proud of myself :).

I've pulled them often...there's no real "how to", you just do it. If you have enough adrenaline pumping in your system (i.e. whatever it is better be important), biology will largely take care of itself.

Usually 2-3 hours of sleep in between will help, as will coffee if you're not a habitual drinker. Make sure you have a very loud alarm clock that you can't just bang to submission next to your bed (i.e. you have to walk to disable it) and even then it's not guaranteed you're going to wake up lol. A friend/roommate will usually help a bit here. Sometimes a 20 minute power nap is enough to relax and have your body come back ready for more goodness.

I've pulled consecutive all-nighters before, it ain't pretty but it gets the job done.

I tried all-nighters when I had to study for apush in 10th grade but wasn't physically capable. My brain literally shuts off after a while. If you're like me, I'd suggest taking brief naps and working only immediately after you've slept a little bit. I don't know about caffeine though, I don't drink coffee.

Sounds like I'm a bit late to offer any insight, but this was fun. I've pulled numerous all-nighters, too. I've broken the 40-hour mark a good few times.

And I actually read a thing before, come to think of it, proposing that it is the best method of study; that it is when your brain is most aware that it is in crunch time, and thus most absorbent. But then, that sounds pretty stupid to me, so...
