My friend thinks she is being abused.

It depends. That's a rather vague question, abuse being rather variable. Generally, though, they'll try to control that abuse somehow, partaking in it themselves in some instances, in the case of guys being abused more so I'd say, or in the case of girls, they might subject themselves to the same abuse outside of the family situation, as if to convince themselves that that's what they actually want - an example of this would be people smoking, as though to convince themselves they actually want to die in the end anyway, as though it's their making.

In the moment, I'm not so sure to be honest, but I'd imagine any irregularity at all could be easily enough analyzed, the starting point of "being abused" established.
