You got intrusive thoughts? A need to wash your hands often? When your walking over a tiled floor, do you step on certain tiles and not others?

Actually, those are the real symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. I should know; I think I've also got it.

Sometimes I have to look back at my post to make sure I didn't use profanities or derogatory terms towards certain groups of people and/or the person I was talking to.

What? Like niggers, pakis, towel-heads or dykes?

I only know the first one, but yeah, kind of like that. When I walk past black people in public I sometimes have to forcibly keep my mouth shut.

Doesn't mean you have it. OCD characteristics can be bad habits.

I've also got the hair-picking to an extent, and I used to only walk on certain tiles.

I would never use such derogatory language towards a person, but my brain goes "ooh, what an evil thought. Let's think it." Usually the thought is in word form, not a mental image. Therefore, I "counter" it with counter-words that make the evil thoughts null. It's more likely to happen towards a black person or a gay person, though I've yet to actually blurt out the word that my mind generates.

I do that too, though I usually counter it by cutting my wrists.

Okay, I was exaggerating. It's usually not my wrists.

Counselling doesn't help in the slightest. I've talking to a couple of shrinks for the last two months. One of them just wants to play nanna and make sure I don't fail anymore courses, while the guy who did the psych report clearly had no idea who I was. To be fair, it might have helped if I hadn't lied to them so much.

Epsilon: There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero... never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith.

It's really important not to indulge it. Make a mental note that you have completed the task and acknowledge any anxiety but do not do the task again. It will only be reinforced and cause more anxiety if you give in.
Accept you feel anxious, do not try to suppress it or your body will ramp up the emotion as it thinks you are not recieving the message. Perhaps make a cue card to follow ie lock door, keys in bag, leave, put card in bag, tolerate & acknowledge anxiety etc. I f the cards in the bag it is done. Be bloody minded.
If it is severe you should get professional advice of course as it can be very disabling if it runs unchecked.
Hope this helps someone.
