So my Algebra homework took me over 3 hours to finish (2 hr, 30 mins if you subtract playing baseball outside), and I was wondering, how much homework did you guys have back in middle school?

Is this too much homework?

The fact that you even considered including "time playing baseball outside" in your homework time suggests a time management issue, rather than an amount of homework issue.

Get the quiz up app, it'll help your speed if you are just trying to burn through a ton of problems.

No, I spent 1 hour straight doing algebra, 30 mins playing baseball (taking a break) and 1 hour and 30 minutes straight doing algebra. No time management issues here.

What kind of questions are we looking at here (example please)? And how many?

Factoring trinomials (my teacher didn't even teach us this, he just gave us a method and told us to learn from the book.) Here's an example:

3x^2 + 27x + 9 (not a real problem, just something like that)

That would seem like the issue is with the teacher, rather than the amount of homework. If it is something like that and jus solve for X, I would expect that to take between 60 and 90 minutes.

When I was learning algebra, we would have 10-15 standard problems like that, then 3-5 word problems.

It's not solving for X, it's factoring it. But yeah, it would've taken less time if my teacher had properly taught it.

If you didn't know how to factor trinomials then its a bit unfair. Frankly though, 27 trinomial questions can be solved in half an hour if you get to a good standard, like you'll need to in later years (or at least in Australia) . The fact is, trinomials are easy marks. You also need them in a whole array of other problems... so get good at them!

That said, I remember copious amounts of mathematics homework at times. This homework is okay, but if you don't grasp the concept, you're just staring at the page for awhile. What I'm doing (in year 12, HSC year) is to focus nearly 85% of my time on worked problems, typically from past exam booklets. The idea is twofold:

1. You are doing the exact questions you need to be able to do
2. You are getting instantaneous feedback from every question

I cannot stress how important no. 2 is. While practice is important, its also vital that you actually learn from what you're doing... If possible, try to renegotiate the questions you are doing for homework (should work if you already are a good student) . The problem will recede as you enter senior years and are expected to be doing much of your own revision, if its any consolation.

Middle school my math was taking about an hour and a half to two hours. This year as a freshmen in highschool I only have like 30-45 minutes of math.

I remember middle school homework coming in waves. Some days I would have nothing, and others I would have hours and basically do homework until I went to bed. Ahh the good old days...don't worry Dtaylor, I promise all of life isn't as lame as middle school is at least not so far. Idk about you guys, but *everyone* (including me) at my middle school was pretty much a complete douchebag, lol

I think a major factor to consider is how good you are at math.
27 problems doesn't seem like that much.

Now, read a chapter in a book (like a novel) might be 20 pages, and that would take me two hours. Is that too much homework, reading 20 pages in Huckleberry Finn?

"Too much" is all relative.
My work here is, finally, done.

When I saw my math teacher (or any teacher) didn't check my work, I stopped taking homework seriously. I would come home and screw around, then go to school the next day and do everything an hour before class. I just made it look like I did work, he'd glance at it, and stamp it.

Lol we had notes in APUSH we had to do that would be stamped, and I would literally write song lyrics in them because A) she didnt check and B) they didnt help me AT ALL. I wasn't about to waste time doing busy work that they were too lazy to even check. I wasted my time on DDO instead

I went to about four different middle schools and never had that much homework in the math courses timewise, other than maybe twice a quarter. Was usually something to start on the bus, finish 20 minutes later when class started. 12 trinomials might be a normal assignment for a daily course. Which should be solvable in about 12 minutes if they're really just trinomials.

Nuke school math is a different story :P

BTW OP, you have 3 classes a day alternating, or 6 classes a day, or what?

6 classes a day and an overnight assignment makes 2.5 hrs a real concern.

But again, trinomials like the ones you posted shouldn't take that long to factor.

I had about 4 hours a day. Studies have shown that too much homework can actually have a negative effect on learning.
