...and you had to spend all of it in one of these two ways, would you spend it traveling the world or building a mansion?

Mansion. I get homesick on long travels... I'm just more of a home-body :P

I'd build a crazy big mansion. Then I'd sell off parts of it and travel the world.

I think it's smarter to put your money into an investment than to blow it all with nothing to show for it. That way, your money lasts longer.

I would travel. My house is fine the way it is. I don't need a bigger one. I, however, love to travel. I have been to London, Paris, and Rome. I might also soon go on a trip to Paris again and maybe Berlin or Barcelona.

You do realize with $5,000,000 you could travel the world for 50 years on a yearly budget of $100,000?

In my Eurotrip adventure of glory I only spent $500/week. That adds up to $26,000/year. I can't imagine how badass it would be to spend $100,000/year or more for life.

I'd buy a mansion on the biggest parcel of land available, far away from any settlement. Preferably with a forest, a lake and an independent energy supply. Enjoying the solitude.

That's tough, though...can I buy things on my trip? And if so, how far does that extend? I could buy dozens of relatively small houses all around the world....

This isn't really a strict thought experiment, but lets say buying houses is out of the picture, since that is what differentiates it from the 'building a mansion' part. However, I think the option of short-term renting apartments should be available. That's what most long-term backpackers end up doing: 3-month stays in a base location (e.g. Kuala Lumpur), then taking 2-3 day trips to various islands and nearby cities (e.g. Bankok, Jakarta). That way you can spend enough time in an area to grow accustomed to it, have a gym, grocery store, etc. Part of the reason travelling isn't that fun is all of the logistics: what time is the hostel open? what train do I take? where is that? what's the local currency? etc. Your time is proportionately more-dominated by overthinking about logistics. The 1-3 month stays allow you to get around that.

Traveling the world, and buying various financial assets along the way ;)

Even if I had twenty million dollars in my bank account, I cannot imagine ever wanting more than a three bedroom condo in a city.

Would I be able to bring a guest with me to travel the world? Because if so, I'm definitely doing that!! Hell, either way I'd probably travel.

Can I sell the mansion after I build it? If not, then traveling the world, as property taxes would screw me over.

You do realize if you invest it in just a modest portfolio you could easily see 5% of safe (safe is always subjective) returns and have $250,000/year forever (any only pay 15% tax on it)!

Travel, hands down. I'd make an extensive catalog of worldwide orchid species. An entire lifetime as an orchid hunter would be amazing.

I would definitely do this. If I ever got bored I could splurge and then settle down.
