I very much would like to try this recipe (http://www.gutenberg.org...) from one of the most interesting, humorous, depressing, and entertaining books I've found recently. This book explores every facet of human existence I can think of - it speaks to me.

I want to buy Song Thrush meat for the recipe, but cannot find any vendors that sell them and am unsure of what to substitute them with. Any help?

I have spent quite a bit of time looking for a solution to this issue - this site (http://davidlansing.com...) suggests that a Blackbird would be a valid substitute, though not ideal. The problem, then, becomes: where can I find blackbird meat?

This site (http://postcardsfromthedinnertable.wordpress.com...) portrays Blackbirds as birds not commonly eaten, and definitely not harvested and sold - as seen by the fact that his mother-in-law had to catch her own birds, rather than buy them from a vendor.

This Yahoo! Answers post (https://answers.yahoo.com...) shows another wondering where Song Thrushes can be bought.

This Yahoo! Answers post (https://answers.yahoo.com...) has multiple people claim that Blackbird tastes like Duck - if Thrush = Blackbird, and Blackbird = Duck, then it follows that Thrush = Duck. Therefore, it would seem that Duck would be an acceptable substitute for Thrush, correct?

Please help. I need to know how to eat or replicate the experience of eating one of these goddamn birds.

It was mentioned that Blackbirds are gamier than Thrushes - does this mean that I should look for a less-gamy substitute for Blackbirds?

New development - a man (http://www.survivalistboards.com...) attests that Baltimore Orioles taste like wild Quail. Baltimore Orioles are Blackbirds - does this mean that Baltimore Orioles are a valid substitute for Thrushes? Since Baltimore Orioles seem to be, and since Baltimore Orioles taste as wild Quail tastes, does it follow that wild Quail can be substituted for Thrush?

Disregard the previous post - new sources (http://en.wikipedia.org...) indicate that "Despite the similar names, the first groups are only distantly related to the Old World common blackbird (a thrush) or the Old World orioles."

It looks like the previous lead, which looked hopeful at the start, is now buried at the bottom of a well. Fcking birds and their classifications. I just want a nice meal.

A surprising new lead has been found - this scholarly article (Http://www.tandfonline.com...) has this to say:

"The chemical and fatty acid composition and color of wild thrush (Turdus philomelos) and turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur) meat were investigated. No significant differences in the chemical composition were observed between the meat of thrush and that of turtle dove. However, significant differences (p < 0.05) in the fatty acid composition of the three fractions (glycerides, phospholipids, and free fatty acids) and in color parameters were observed. The main fatty acid in thrush meat was oleic acid (around 30%), and the high content of docosahexaenoic acid (C-22:6n-3) (more than 10% in the three fractions) was remarkable. There was a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (more than 50%) in the turtle dove meat; the main PUFA were linoleic (C-18:2n-6) and arachidonic (C-20:4n-6) acids."

Can anyone here take a chance and say if they believe that this means that the two birds are similar in taste? If so, I have found what seems to be a very reputable source vending Dove meat (http://www.exoticmeatmarkets.com...).

I CAN ALMOST TASTE THE THRUSHY CHARTREUSE NOW. I'M BRINGING BACK ROMAN CULTURE, I TELL YOU

"Dove Meat
1
$39.99
$29.99
You save: $10.00
"

I don't even know how much meat constitutes "1 Dove meat", but at this point I don't really give a damn. I'm going to hit the trigger on this soon, when I have the proper occasion to cook a dish of this high calibre.

The recipe is from imperial Rome, so no. It is the meat of Thrush.

Basically, I want to eat this elusive bastard: http://ichef.bbci.co.uk...

Imperial Rome, doesn't sound so bad.
Sounds... Intriguing. I hope you have fun trying to catch your little bird.
