http://www.debate.org...

It is a long brass rod, with a chained loop at one end, and it twists off on the other.
Untwisting this released some sort of gas, or depressurized the rod.
The rod is less thick then a standard pen, and about a foot long.

It was inside that clothed scabbard, which seemed to be made for this.
I found it on top of my cabinets in the kitchen, near the stove's vent.

I have no idea what it is, or what it is for.
Any help is appreciated.

It's meant to light fires, stoves, etc. It's basically a really long lighter. They're increasingly rare. My grandparents used to have one.

The gas is probably butane, btw. There should be a thing on the end that spins, which is connected to a flint, that will spark if you strike it. Hold it down, strike it, and you should get a flame.

That is believable.
Thank you.
