I am trying to watch and like this movie, but it is so spectacularly bad... I literally do not see how this movie series appealed to anyone.

It was so awful, I can't even right now. The books were okay.

I haven't read the books, and my friends who know my literary tastes tell me that while I would think they are not 'horrible', I would have very few positive things to say about them.

I'm even a fan of Donald Sutherland; there was a show called Crossing Lines he was excellent in, and I loved him in Dirty Sexy Money. But Hunger Games is just horrible. The first movie was not as bad as I expected it to be (although based on reviews I expected a total disaster), but Catching Fire is a complete disaster.

They were not 'horrible' but at the same time they were not good at all. Some people I know begged me to read them and said they are very short and quick reads. I wasted 6 hours on the series, gaining nothing.

Catching fire was overall unmemorable. All I can remember about it was my buddy put a lot of butter in the popcorn and it got all over my hands and the cheesy beach kiss.

I'm drinking scotch and soda while watching it... so... not exactly buttered popcorn, but all things considered I'm not impressed. I haven't made it to the beach kiss scene yet... but I give up. Back to my Nazi Hunters documentary... now that is interesting.

I thought the books were ok, but not spectacular: but I can see why it's popular. But man...you made it 25 minutes into the movie??? That's amazing.

I read them a while ago. I thought it used the suspense to a good effect, and it was pretty well-written overall. Remember, I was like, 11, so at your age you might not take as much out of it.

It's like they took what worked in the first one, duplicated it through a retarded printer, and added a bunch of nonsense that create more plot holes than anything else. I enjoyed the middle of the movie, from the quarter swell announcement to the beginning of the games. Everything else was just awful.

Compared to the books, I agree with Endark.

Ignoring the books and only critiquing the movie- i disagree to an extent.

I'm blown away by what I'm hearing.

This is the first time anywhere - IRL and on the Internet - where I'm seeing people think the second movie was worse than the first. Which is crazy. The first was atrocious. The second was far superior.

I'm surprised. The second movie was 1,000 times better than the first, and the 3rd book in the trilogy is one of the best I've ever read.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?

Yeah.
Even Rotten Tomatoes agrees (84% versus 89%.)

First, the first movie stood alone as a film, this did not.
Second, the climax makes zero sense.
Third, the heroine is even more unlikable.
Peter was even more annoying.
There was barely any character development.
I had no emotional ties to anyone. (I cried when Rue died, mind you)
In fact, the games were clearly a farce and could have been avoided.

The next movie may be able to redeem the second, but I doubt they will, as they'd need to explain some important stuff.
My work here is, finally, done.

I am trying to watch and like this movie, but it is so spectacularly bad... I literally do not see how this movie series appealed to anyone.

The first one was good.
This one sucked so, so, so much.

We'll see if they redeem themselves in the next one (read: two, sigh).

Ah, see, I had the opposite opinion. The first movie was really bad to me. Maybe a 2 out of 10? Almost unwatchable, I'd say. The second one was entertaining. Probably the second best film of last year, behind Her.

The first movie had a lot of things going against it. It had to establish the universe, which is always a hefty challenge. In so doing, it made the mistake a lot of weaker series introductions made: it took audience knowledge for granted. Many scenes and concepts were introduced without any background knowledge. Having read the book, I understood their meaning, but it made the film less of a stand-alone entity.

Second movies in series usually have an easier time with story induction. They can also play a little faster and looser with storylines, as the audience and world have already been established. I'd say both of these things played in Catching Fire's favor; it didn't have to win anyone over, so it was free to just tell its story. The action was cleaner, the characters and dialogue were better written, the emotional drama...existed lol.

The third one looks terrible, though.

I'm blown away by what I'm hearing.

This is the first time anywhere - IRL and on the Internet - where I'm seeing people think the second movie was worse than the first. Which is crazy. The first was atrocious. The second was far superior.

Yeah, this is the first time I'm hearing this opinion, too. It's understandable, as they are very different films. There are people who think A New Hope is better than The Empire Strikes Back. They aren't wrong, they just prefer a different type of movie.

It wasn't supposed to. It's the second in a trilogy. That's pretty much impossible to make into a stand-alone film.

Second, the climax makes zero sense.

How not? It s the same climax they had in the book.

Third, the heroine is even more unlikable.

I disagree. She was much more likable in this film than the first one. Of course, she's never entirely likable, which is part of what makes the series so great.

Peter was even more annoying.

Again, I thought Peeta was much better in the second film.

There was barely any character development.

You sure you're not talking about the first movie?

I had no emotional ties to anyone. (I cried when Rue died, mind you)

Okay.

In fact, the games were clearly a farce and could have been avoided.

How so?

The next movie may be able to redeem the second, but I doubt they will, as they'd need to explain some important stuff.
