Just a curious thought...do you ever get nervous right before you read your opponent's argument or at any other time while debating? Is it a normal reaction to debating or do you think it's for sissies?

When I have a character limit for something, I freak out.
Solonkr~
I don't care about whether an ideology is "necessary" or not,
I care about how to solve problems,
which is what everyone else should also care about.

In essence, the world is fucked up and you can either ignore it, become cynical or bitter about it.

Haha, I assume you are either a lengthy debater or your opponents set too low of character limits.

I don't do serious debates, but I tend to ramble a lot. xD

Not at all.
Commentator on a picture with David Cameron and a Cat: 'Amazing what you can achieve with photoshop these days. I'm sure that used to be a pig.'

Commentator on Hillary Clinton: 'If Clinton is now what passes for progressive, maybe this country deserves Trump.'

Commentator on British parliament: 'All that talent in one place, where is Ebola when you need it?'

John Kerry on words: 'These aren't just words, folks.'

I haven't debated in years, but when I did, it was almost exclusively about topics I enjoyed. If the debate is fun for you, it takes away the nerves.

Somewhat. But I think excited is a better word. And anxious, too. I don't particularly mind losing as I learn something from it, but, like practically anyone, I prefer winning lol.

I am nervous on not winning, but not so significantly that it really bothers me.

Why, do you get nervous?

Sometimes I break down into a complete anxiety attack. I go to my panic room where I roll up into the fetal position and hug my pillow for several hours until I can calm down.

I get nervous all the time.

A little, usually in more serious debates. In noon sniping debates or rap battles hardly at all. I had another account with 20 debates but wanted to clean my slate and start a more serious account so I switched.

That's interesting, I'm quite the opposite. I never reach the character limit and always run out of things to say before I'm even halfway there lol.

Ah, understandable. In our debate, I see your case is very well put together, and can see you are at least somewhat experienced in debate on this site. Due to me playing Devil's advocate, having some time constraints, and trying to write most of my case in one sitting, it will be challenging to beat, or even tie, with you. But still, it'll be fun for sure.

Very much so. I get/got teased by my team for my trademark panic attacks...even during my 15-0 season.

I know a cure for that ;) (Well, maybe that kind of thing induced by debate)

I admit that I don't think I could take Devil's Advocate in our topic like you are doing. I am curious about the other side of the issue, and I definitely do think it will be fun.

Because it's a rush. And, once you get over the initial wave of nerves, it's fun.

Why do actors try out for shows when they get nervous in every audition? Nerves are just part of the process.

Actors tend to get paid though, but good point.

Nah if I debate something I know a lot about (homosexuality, death penalty, firearms, drug legalization) I generally can guess what my opponent will do.

In my Electoral College debate I know a ton about my side, but hardly anything about the opposing side.

IRL, yes. When everyone is watching you, and you need to create a speech ad lib, with only the time that your opponents are speaking to create your rebuttals, the stress is quite high. Online, no stress at all.
