So in my 3 years on DDO I've noticed one thing. Certain avatars tend to have their own personas. People, sadly enough, tend to treat you differently based on what your avatar looks like.

Have you noticed this? What are your thoughts on this?

I guess it's just human nature, but I (and probably a lot of other users) tend to judge what a user is like from their profile pic.
For instance, one of your previous profile pictures caused me to view you as a hardline Conservative who was very pro-military and authoritarian.
I saw Truth_Seeker as one of those anti-social loners who was goth/emo.
I saw Bsh1 as a mild-mannered black woman.

And I agree that that's one of the things that causes this as many people tend "Judge the book by it's color" and it's a human thing to do.

Minus deh purple circlez, no, I haven't noticed a personal bias to or from anyone. The only real issues I have regarding avatars are the stock people ones, so my thought process of a convo I was having with one generic 'General' bleeds into another generic general, thinking its the same person.

Of course its not, its just the generic avatar thing, but at least there is a some what logical reason for it.

I think that's true, even form my own experience. I feel like when I have an image of Guinan up, I get treated differently (esp. by people who I don't know well) than when I have an image of a barely clothed male model as my profile pic.

I will sometimes view 2 different purple circles as the same person.

That is interesting, and--to an extent--I feel like I've had experiences similar to F_16. I've had newer members or member who didn't know me treat me more like a brainless teen female when I had shirtless guys as my picture. Even members who did know me changed their behavior in subtler ways, like relaxing more around me.

It's kind of upsetting...given the choice, I would much prefer a really hot shirtless guy as my avatar to Guinan (so much nicer to log on to), but Guinan gives me the gravitas...The struggle.

I've actually been thinking of doing away with all non-Guinan avatars (with the exception of themed avvie weeks)...

Lol, I just find your guy pics funny. You talk about being a reserved and quiet guy, come across as pretty calm, and have the chill black lady avatar to match. Then, out of nowhere, you throw out this hella-provocative and half naked model pic. Its just funny (in a good way), lol.

In all seriousness, there probably is some truth to people being treated slightly differently. Although I wouldn't know it personally. I've had this avatar for 2+ years.

I am much more shy IRL. DDO has, surprisingly, brought me out of myself. I am extremely quiet in interpersonal moments in my regular life, and there are a variety of reasons for that, I think. DDO gives me a space to show the unreserved side of me. But even on here I try to be pretty even-keeled.

In all seriousness, there probably is some truth to people being treated slightly differently. Although I wouldn't know it personally. I've had this avatar for 2+ years.

That's partly why I am thinking of doing away with all non-Guinan avatars. I kinda like the idea of being associated with a particular image...but, IDK. You're profile picture just screams you, because you've had it so long.

I feel differently depending on what my avatar is. I've noticed it for a while. With my first avatar, I was this tattooed breastfeeding woman, and I felt really aggressive and feminist, and then I had this photo of a child holding a candy cigarette and I felt kind of dark/innocent/wistful, and now I have this trolling mona lisa and I feel like making fun of people, which is something I didn't use to feel.
It's like, I think, who am I? and the avatar is right there on my screen and it brings out that side of me.

It's not just me. It's called the Proteus Effect:

I forgot about that thread. I still ignore default avatars, people with names that appear randomly generated, and nature scene avatars lol
