Over the last few months I have been back and forth on my "faith." Well, its finally happened. I have finally admitted to myself that I do not really have any. I no longer believe in God.

I was honestly surprised when I had first looked at your religion and it said Latter Day Saints, when I thought of your personality and views.

This is more believable in my opinion, as odd as that may sound to you.

Idk...you just never railed against certain things and promoted other things the way most Mormons would.

You don't have any shown opinion on social issues - abortion, euthanasia, and gay marriage - which are all things I'd expect a Mormon to be staunchly against.

I used to show opinions on those topics... but my opinions have developed and pro/con is a simplistic way to look at those issues haha.

I am apathetic on this, but make sure you tread carefully with your social and family circles about this. Personally I got a bit zealous and was a bit lost for a while after this happened to me and I freaked people out a bit. Went through a depression phase too... yeah... make sure you stay on your feet. It can be hard for some (it was for me).

Just remember you are essentially the same person as you were before, just be yourself.

Congratulations, young man. You have just done yourself a huge favor that you will one day thank yourself for. Over and over again.

I too escaped the superstitious cult that is religion. A little younger than you are. I was raised Catholic.

You have basically freed yourself form a type of jail. A jail of the mind. that would oppress you and stunt your emotional and intellectual growth. Life is far too short to live by talking to and believing in and--worst of all--worshiping an imaginary friend who does not exist. the one the christians call god. Or the Mooslims call Allah.

You will find the world of knowledge to be a beautiful and much more enriching place than the dark and restraining cloak of religion. Soon, you will feel so much better that you will ask yourself what took you so long! LOL.

Again, congrats! Welcome to the Brights.

Yeah, I am not really going to change much, tbh I will still go to church with my wife... there is a fair amount of utility to being apart of a community and to leave suddenly would be tough. I am treading lightly. My wife knows and my brother. I have not told anyone else in my family. Some of my close friends are aware as I spoke to many of them about my doubts for a long time.

And yeah, I can appreciate that, amigo.

Which just goes to show that it took even more courage and integrity for you to let go of your well-intentioned, but alas, misguided Faith. That is, when you were totally surrounded by it with family and friends.

But again, you can always take heart in the fact that you did the right thing.

As you will see.

Guaranteed.

Yeah, fortunately for me my family, gf etc. were never really church-going to begin with. I attended my Nan & Grandad's blessing of their marriage - but I do miss that social network. You only need to share one thing to be in a community. I have heard of a few people who still go to church for the same reasons you posited.

I am treading lightly. My wife knows and my brother. I have not told anyone else in my family. Some of my close friends are aware as I spoke to many of them about my doubts for a long time.

I don't know what your community is like so I cannot recommend anything. For me I like in super-liberal and multicultural London and my field is in science. Religion is like the least important thing here socially, especially in my circles - so a lot of problems I ran into were personal rather than social ones. The very fact I got more interested in religion was what freaked my social circle out, rather than the fact I was an atheist.

What!????

The short answer is there is an overwhelming lack of evidence.

As we shared faith in the same church, perhaps you could ask me via personal messages.

I read it as them saying "no, you can't do this!", like you being an atheist affected them personally in a deep manner.

Well if one really believes than I would imagine they would see this a a drastic problem, like witnessing someone reject living with God, spiritual nourishment etc. I am not surprised.

I found Vox's and Varrack's reactions rather odd.

Why is that?

I read it as them saying "no, you can't do this!", like you being an atheist affected them personally in a deep manner.

Wouldn't you say "no, you mustn't do this!" If you saw somebody preparing to jump off a cliff (which is basically equivalent to what a Christian would see this as being)?

Well if one really believes than I would imagine they would see this a a drastic problem, like witnessing someone reject living with God, spiritual nourishment etc. I am not surprised.

I am - because it's like they have any say over your personal beliefs.
