So, I decided to open this thread so we can help each other or share experiences or whatever. I know there are a couple others who are also freshmen this year and I'm sure entering college is an fascinating experience for all of us. ^^

I'll start. I don't start school until September, but registration day has passed and the days leading up to 1 Sept will be eventful.

I visited the school before reg day to get to know the campus. Right after I left the train station, I saw a linguistics professor, so I walked up and talked to him for a bit. He's really nice and we chatted for a while. He'll be teaching me both semesters next year, so that's a nice start I think!

One thing I noticed about the school is that they love putting up pictures of their famous alumni, particularly Sun Yat-sen, the founder of Modern China. There was Eileen Chang, the greatest female Chinese novelist of the 20th century, as well. (Great to be studying in the same place they studied. XD) I also found out that they have three museums with rocks, fossils, excavated artefacts, etc. My favourite was a pterodactyl fossil. The museums were absolutely amazing. <3

As for what I'm going to study, I plan to be majoring in linguistics (obviously). There are only two courses in the first semester, so I'll concentrate more on what I plan to be my second major - computer science. Under UndeniableReality's advice, I'll take some mathematics courses too.

How is college for you so far? ^^

Look... My city is much more liberal than yours, and there are certainly people who go to college with that intention, but nobody would have the guts to announce it publicly like that... so I'm fairly sure you're trolling. :P

Lol what.

First of all, I'm not trolling. People always assume I'm trolling because the normal moral people don't usually say the stuff I say. Also the way I say it sounds trolly, but its not.

Secondly, its the internet!! No one from my college will know who I really am.

I don't know. I just figured that if I get a degree it'll boost my prospects of being able to get a job. History's an easy subject to me, so...
(Don't get me wrong; there are several things which I legitimately want to study in college; there are two languages that I'd like to eventually learn and I'd like to become more knowledgeable in business and economics.)

I've just met someone who was thinking along similar lines on registration day. Coincidentally, he was also going to choose history... When I told him I was planning to do linguistics + CS, he thought I was a masochist or something. Though he said he hoped to do an MPhil afterwards, and history seemed like an easier subject to get a good GPA in.

TBH, I think a history degree might not exactly boost your chance of employment (unless you plan to teach history at school). Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you should get a BBA or something - in Hong Kong, there are so many BBAs that graduates generally get ~USD1000/month after graduation. However, I think that if your purpose of getting a degree is just to find a better job, I think you should choose a job related to a profession, like optometry or surveying...

I'm a humanities student because I hope to go to graduate school and teach in tertiary institutions in the future. Even if I don't succeed, there are a lot of jobs that linguistics (and CS) majors here can fall back on. However, I don't know if there are similar jobs for history majors...

My reasoning is that any degree, especially one that took more than 2 years to attain, would give me an edge over, say, a guy who never went to college. I am aware that there's not much which can be done with a history degree (though to be fair I'm minoring in Political Science), but the idea is that potential employers will consider somebody who has a 4-year degree to be harder working or smarter than somebody without a degree.

Plus, with a history degree I only need one math class (I hate math classes), and only a few science (that is, chemistry, physics, biology, etc) classes.

One big problem with college is that I'll be receiving a large amount of government assistance. This irks me, and I'm gonna feel like a total moocher hypocrite unless I treat it like a loan and eventually pay society back.

Private Christian College (besides, even if not I don't think I'd be willing to fail college just to futilely protest society's favored scientific model).

Are there any well-paying jobs that can be attained from studying arts subjects? I have a strong interest in world history, but I don't see myself majoring in anything related to it because of the dismal prospects for financial stability...

Oh, so you're going to a college where you can say "Praise Jesus" or "God did it" on everything and pass with a degree? That's literally what you can do in a Christian school.

Private Christian College (besides, even if not I don't think I'd be willing to fail college just to futilely protest society's favored scientific model).

Oh, so you're going to a college where you can say "Praise Jesus" or "God did it" on everything and pass with a degree? That's literally what you can do in a Christian school.

lololololololol

Laugh out loud out loud out loud out loud out loud out loud out loud? what?

I've already attended two classes at my college during my final days in high school, and as a result I can assure you that the college is solidly intellectual. In fact, students generally need slightly higher grades to get in than they do with similar public secular colleges in my area. The only difference is that the education process is from a Christian perspective.

Can I ask you one thing, do you think someone would be better off in an ivy league college or a Christian college?

The Ivy League college would hold its students to a quite higher standard and have an education of higher quality than 90% of colleges out there probably. So it's an easy choice.
But to further demonstrate my earlier point, my younger brother (who's ahead of his age group) took the CLEP test. His score was high enough to get into the local secular colleges, but not the private Christian College in question.
