So I was looking through my debate record and I realized something. I have only won a couple of debates vs respectable opponents. Furthermore, most times I have attempted to debate a higher caliber debater I get creamed.

I have debated and lost against:

Romanii: http://www.debate.org...

18Karl: http://www.debate.org...

Mydinosaurhands:
http://www.debate.org...

Phantom: http://www.debate.org...

16kAdams: http://www.debate.org...

Whiteflame: http://www.debate.org...

Debateability: http://www.debate.org...

YYW: http://www.debate.org...

Wylted: http://www.debate.org...

BSH1: http://www.debate.org...

ETC.... you get the point.

This has me discouraged. It seems perhaps that debating is just not my thing.

Practice is the only way to get better...

What is debate about? Winning like two votes on a site no one will ever see or care about to stroke your ego or to learn critical thinking, improve your writing skills, learn interesting facts, ect.

Do you feel you've been doing better since you started? What was your first debate like, and how do you feel it compares to your best?

I realize that I have learned a great deal debating. Before looking I was under the impression that I was more competent than the record shows. I have argued devils advocate on debates I assumed I would lose but gave a good effort. Its not so much about winning or losing, my pride is just taking a hit because, while I did not think myself among the best on the site I did consider my self competent and competitive.

Well, when you think of yourself to be at a certain level and then observe as objectively as you can that you are significantly below where you thought you were, it is discouraging.

Well, no offense but you aren't going to beat people like whiteflame or Bsh any time soon. Those guys, on top of being wicked smart, have had *years* of debating experience under their belt. There's no shame in losing to superior opponents, imo.

But I glanced through the debates, and for the people you COULD beat a lot of the topics are kinda dumb. Like people under 18 voting. Dumb policy. Or people over 65 not being allowed to vote...if you're gonna take on topics like that that's fine but what exactly do you expect? On top of that, many of the debates were close to a year ago or at the very least several months. I think you're being overly pessimistic and need to get some confidence cuz you've posted stuff like this before.

It took me literally 5 seconds to find a debate you won against a decent opponent: http://www.debate.org...

Other than practice, another way to get better is to read good debates from good debaters. If you're serious about getting better, stop posting in this thread until you have some thoughts on the debate between whiteflame and I. Then after you post those thoughts, I'd be interested in hearing what you think on the 16k/Joey v. Roy debate too.

So those debates you mentioned where early on in my time debating. I meant to post this on vs. Romanii. http://www.debate.org...

Which by the way is still in the voting period if you want to give feedback.

I have spent a great deal of time reading others debates. I have even actively looked for pointers and tried to implement them. As you said this is not my first time posting something like this. It just seems like I am not getting any better.

It shouldn't discourage you.

I had a 30/31 win record a few months ago, but that was because I hadn't really gone the distance. Sure I had gone up against some good guys that challenged me, but no one legendary. It was around that time I decided I would debate bsh, 16k, and thett. They all ended up beating me, but I learned a lot more from my debates with them than with others I'd gone up against. It didn't convince me that I was any worse than I started or just the same, but rather it helped me reach I new level of thinking critically.

What I don't understand is making the jump from loss to discouragement. Why does loss lead to shame when loss is what helps you go from one level to the next (at least in my experience it has, and I assume that it has in yours too even if you aren't aware of it).

If you love to debate, then what difference does it make to win or lose? Many competitive people lose most of the time but they love to compete anyway. It's the hope of winning that keeps competition going.

If it wasn't for losers, there wouldn't be any winners so think of your position as a positive thing. You're losing so some people can be winners.

Just relax and enjoy the ride.
