(Message of Shri Datta Swami)

The husband wants that his wife should not be attracted by other males, but he is attracted by other females. Similar is the case with wife. Shri Rajaneesh attacked this issue in this way and such approach is only partial. What about the case in which one is attracted to the side while the other remains chaste? You cannot generalise the case of some people to all. Here is a person, who is very loyal to his wife but she is attracted by somebody else. Shri Rajneesh liberalized the concept by finding fault with the other side also. In general, he may be correct. But, what about a specific case? Ofcourse, this case may be otherwise, because tomorrow I may get a problem from a chaste wife complaining about her husband for his side attraction. Therefore, one should not misunderstand Me siding only chaste wives or only chaste husbands. The issue is if one side is chaste and the other side is not chaste, what should be the solution? The solution for this is again multi-dimensional and multi-stepped.

First of all, I should question whether the marriage took place by the full consent of both the boy and girl. Sometimes the consent is given by boy or girl as a ‘no objection certificate'. But that is not sufficient for a marriage. It should have a positive certificate of intensive attraction towards each other. The attraction becomes permanent and real if it is based on the total personality. Mere physical appearance is only one factor. If the physical appearance alone is the basis, the love should reduce as the old age comes or if the appearance is spoiled by some illness or accident in life. Buddha was attracted to Amrapali in her old age to serve her!

The husband or wife gets attracted by a better ‘total personality' of opposite sex, whenever met in life. Mental attraction is hidden by several people by controlling their words. Words and actions of body are inert and do not participate in the sin. When this body, which spoke or did some wrong activity is left over here, the soul is taken to hell in some other energetic body, it is punished. If the body is a participant of the sin, it should be directly taken to hell and should be punished. Therefore, in the hell, the mind is punished through another new body.

Therefore, the sin is in the mind and not in the body. Once the mental attraction is there, the sin is recorded. The words and actions of body are works of inert energy and matter and have no sin. When Sita was carried by Ravana, the body of Sita was fully touched by Ravana by force as per Valmiki Ramayana. This was referred by Sita, herself, (yadyaham gatra samsparsam…). But such attraction was not in her mind and therefore she was declared pure by fire- God (Agni). Renuka got mental attraction towards a king on the banks of Narmada river and she did not touch him even by finger. But she was declared as sinner and her head was cut by her son, Parasurama.

Therefore, after marriage, to get attracted by another person is a sin and the soul is punished in the hell. If the other side is also not chaste, will the sin get mutually cancelled and so no punishment to any one? No. Both will be punished in the hell. Therefore, the philosophy of Shri Rajneesh in this point does not save the soul in any way.

Therefore, the sin is in the mind and not in the body. Once the mental attraction is there, the sin is recorded.:

Why is that a "sin" at all?

Reply: Aspiring other's wife is against justice because it hurts that other person. One should limit to the justified relationships only (wife-husband). This mental attraction grows over a period of time and it translates in to action.

Aspiring other's wife is even against the worldly laws also.

You can be in the most committed relationship in recorded history and you will still be biologically attracted to other people. That is an inevitability. If you were to act upon the temptation, that would arguably be sinful, but you seem to think that attraction = sin. I'm disputing that.

Well, before this can be discussed meaningfully, we have to understand exactly what a sin is.

What exactly is a sin?

What exactly is a sin?
------------------------------------
The concept of Dharma

Word Dharma means characteristic property which stands for identification of an item. Dharma of fire is burning by which it is identified as fire. It is expected natural behavior of an item in creation. If fire is cool, such coolness is Adharma which means that it is not the expected property of specific entity. Human being in this creation is a specified entity & is expected to show certain characteristic properties (Dharmas) by which he is identified as human being. If human being shows characteristic properties of other specified items, it loses its identification.

When God created various items in this world, He has assigned certain characteristic properties to be associated with corresponding items. So, possession of Dharma is will of God. Balance of creation is maintained when specified items exhibit their specified properties assigned by God. All inert items like fire, water etc. are strictly following will of God. God created this universe for entertainment.

Entertainment is disturbed if natural balance is upset. God has given freedom to human beings, which is inherent desire of souls. God has full freedom to change any characteristic property of any specified item. When He wished, fire could not burn, air could not move & water could not quench even a dry grass blade. Since He is omnipotent, He has unlimited freedom. But souls have very little potentiality. Their freedom is naturally conditional & limited.

Living being has little freedom within its specified boundary of its potentiality. If freedom is not given, it is not a living being. Among living beings, human being has full potentiality due to analytical faculty (Buddhi) & thus relatively more freedom is granted to it. Human being should understand limits of its capability & should freely behave within that specified boundary. Such behavior is Dharma which is expected by God. If limits are violated & behavior of some other category like animals is shown, soul is pushed into life cycle of animals.

When a thief was beaten in the police station and is left, he comes out with reduced intensity in his quality of stealing. The deed of stealing does not remain with the thief. It is this remainder of quality that generates its corresponding deed of stealing. The remaining quality of stealing grows in the encouraging atmosphere and generates the deed of stealing. Now you are caught and again punished.

For the second punishment, which is the cause? The root cause is only the remaining quality of stealing. Thus, you are said that you are undergoing the result of the past deed.

The word ‘past deed' means the past remaining quality only. If that past remaining quality is destroyed, there is no second punishment.

Similarly, attraction for other's wife even in mind is not desirable because this quality gains strength over a period of time and results in practice.

The will of God is unavoidable. Assuming that one way is the word of God, while another way would not be is presumptuous. Our free will is an illusion created by our inability to account for all variables, the limitations of our own perception make it appear as though free will is existent, when it really is not.

Your understanding of "life" coupled with the way "life" actually is, there is no such thing as life. Everything is determined, nothing escapes causality, and to say otherwise is to claim the "supernatural", which is an absurdity. It is like saying, "greater than God". The vain imaginings of the human ego are not greater than "God".

The things you speak of are human judgments that manifest themselves when one looks at the world in a particular way. You have placed a grid over reality. If you want to find objective truth, the ultimate reality, and what actuality is, you have to realize that this grid is only there to make sense of what is. The human mind makes sense of things by comparisons. You must take into account the tool that is being used to measure.
