Death, I would say.

Witnessing your whole family being tortured, raped, and murdered before your demise would be worse than just death wouldn't it?

How about witnessing the above atrocities and then being paralyzed but allowed to live and remember the fate of your loved ones?

It's subjective. Death is material nonexistence for the individual. Nothing is more scary to me than nonexistence. But death is a one-time thing. I suppose if I took your scenario, and multiplied it by 100, then perhaps it would be worse than death.

Does that work for "it can always get better" as well?

When you're dead, things can't get worse because they will remain the same.

Your death has made it an almost impossible hardship on your family, now your spouse and children are homeless.

It still persisted to make a situation worse than it previously was . To assume your perception is the only one that matters is a selfish outlook to the question and not very open minded.

Let me clarify. If I'm dead, it can't get worse because I would have no point of view. You suggested that other points of view should be taken into account, but that would suggest an objective reality. The idea of something being worse cannot arise in objective reality. So, I don't see how it could get worse for me if I'm dead.

I do understand where you are coming from, but I didn't mean to make it seem like I only wanted objective opinions. I'm sorry for the redundant confusion =P.

I would still like to hear your opinion though, do you think there is any situation that couldn't get any worse?

It depends on how you look at it. If I could subjectively look at a situation as the following: I am dead - then of course it could get worse, because I could have suffered before dying, or my family could have suffered, etc.

But I will never actually have that opportunity. When I die, nothing could actually get worse from my perspective.

I don't think an end point exists for "it can always get better" in the same way non existence of everything could be as a bottom for "it can always get worse". Though... you could consider infinite existence ... if possible ... as an end point since once everything exists in every possible combination it become "it can only get worse" since at that point things can only pop out of existence.

As an infinite it has no beginning or end, it just "is" and changes into something that never changes. That would lead to an infinite "could be better" or "could be worse" scenarios wouldn't it?

Sorry if I described infinity wrong.

Of course it can always be worse. Up until of of existence is snuffed out. From there it can only get better.

Does that work for "it can always get better" as well?

I prefer to define infinite as a division by zero. Otherwise it's just a destination you can never reach. The one problem with this usage of infinite is that it is infinite existence it would be lacking nonexistence which if you define non existence as the worst then infinite existence would be a state where it can only get worse and not better.
