Have you guys come across any intriguing philosophical short stories or essays? Please share!

Please do. Something that is intellectually challenging. Anything! I have literally been reading over regression models since I recovered from Friday night and I'm bored out of my mind. (I hate reading over undergraduate research. It's so boring.) Please, someone, post something that isn't numbers and will require thought. Something good, preferably that I haven't read.

Something about that writing is incredible.

Just be careful when you read Nietzsche. There is a tendency to read into his writing something that he doesn't mean (and most of the people who get it wrong -who I have seen- are male undergrads).

I have two thoughts:

(1) If a student handed that into me (a) in a college setting, I would do everything within my power to kick them out of school; or if in a (b) non-college setting, I would hold a parent teacher conference/meet with a social worker to determine what actions I could take to place the child in alternative/remedial school.
(2) If I saw that a teacher had graded a that paper in that way, I would feel morally obliged to take the following measures, in the order listed: (a) fire him, (b) contact his degree-granting institution, (c) write a formal complaint to said institution revoking his degree, (d) if degree-granting institution did not revoke his degree, I would file a formal complaint requesting that their accreditation be reviewed.

But I tend to take academic integrity too seriously. I also am a notoriously harsh grader.

I have a feeling you wrote that paper....

I found out an hour ago I have a term paper due tomorrow in Comp. I read two interesting articles on feminism this week so I guess I'm writing about feminism.

You probably are. Two papers turned in in succession for my World Civ class got a 96% and a 95% respectively. For the former I put a great deal of thought into my overarching point and predicated a lot of my analysis on past reading and research. For the latter I basically stayed up the night before and Google'd the sh1t out of the material I was to write about.

There is no shortage of passages in Nietzsche that are tacitly permissive of mass slaughter.

For some light reading on post-modernist and post-colonial views, read http://kirbyk.net... (Achebe's famous lecture An Image of Africa Racism in Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness') . Of course, to properly read and evaluate this you do need to have read Heart of Darkness , which I strongly recommend reading - an early modernist masterpiece with insights into humanity; superbly written.

That's intriguing, 'lighter' reading of a philosophical bent. Not heavy, academic journal like jargon laden work though.

You might have to hold on a month, I don't have my copy of the Nietzsche reader on me but the quote is somewhere in there. I remember it specifically from a course I took on 19th century philosophy last year, it concerned what strength is and Nietzsche says something along the lines of 'strength is being able to continue towards a goal despite the suffering of others.' I don't know if you have the book, but I think it's page 300 something.

Bumping to next page, because I don't like it when my post is at the bottom of the page.
