Axiom
Live for the present, for it is a gift.

I surveyed 100 women and asked them what shampoo they used when showering, 98 of them said: How the hell did you get in here?

Because it can't help it.

Is is more than just an axiom; it is a tautology that is readily observable in all aspects of our life. It defines "equal".

I wouldn't say that 1 equals 1 is necessarily an axiom. However, it is, like everything, based on an axiom. Specifically the Peano Axioms.

For every natural number x, x = x. That is, equality is reflexive.

What we learned as children, that one plus one equals two, we know to be false. One plus one equals one. We even have a word for when you plus another equals one. That word is LOVE.

Prodigenius: Why does 1=1?

The Fool: At first I took you seriously, but I was forced against my will to take you foolishly. For if I took you seriously, it would seem that you are making fun of me. Mocking me in someway, like I was some kind of clown. For only a fool would ask a false questions seriously, where the question, is the answer, and the answer the question. For if you really didn't know the answer, and you were asking honestly, and not to mock me, it would seem you didn't ask the question, as a question, would not infact be a question but something other than itself altogether. But what do you mean, if you don"t mean it, and when you mean "so", it is infact something else that you mean. Who could have such answers? No Not "I".., And so I am offended by your question. You should ask something less offensive next time.
"The bud disappears when the blossom breaks through, and we might say that the former is refuted by the latter; in the same way when the fruit comes, the blossom may be explained to be a false form of the plant's existence, for the fruit appears as its true nature in place of the blossom. These stages are not merely differentiated; they supplant one another as being incompatible with one another." G. W. F. HEGEL

It's more of a meta-answer. It acknowledges the practicality of math while, in the same instance, suggesting that it isn't true. "Usually" is to also say, "sometimes not".

Why does 1=1? Well in the past, it prevented stupid questions.
It's not your views that divide us, it's what you think my views should be that divides us.

Identity is axiomatic.

It's fortunate, because if they were not equal, taxpayers would be forced to provide subsidies until they were equal.

Since 0.999 ... = 1, that's not an exception.

What I like to do is line up my pencils in a row on there erasers until they are all standing up without falling over. Usually when you have a large amount like up around 500, the real excitement begins to peak. It is almost as much fun as trying to figure out axioms.

That's right, because if they weren't equal then one could find a number between 0.999... and 1; but of course there are no numbers between them because they are the same number!

It seems even more than just axiomatic, it seems to be self-evident that a thing is equal to itself. This seems to be the very core of reason.

I do believe that Self-evident or unquestionable is one of the definitions of Axiomatic. That being said, some things are more self evident than others.

Hehehe! It reminds me of Animal Farm: some animals are more equal than others! I agree: a tautology is a "more equal" axiom than a non-tautological axiom. Tautologies have the added benefit of being undeniable.

You might want to lookup Axiomatic. I've looked at 4 dictionaries, including Websters, and they all have Axiomatic defined as self-evident for at least 1 of their definitions.

1=1 isn't just self evidence but demonstrable. I don't think it's so much an axiom as observed and proven.
