It is proven that Marijuana (Pot; weed; what ever you call it) Has less harmful effects on the body and is less adictive than alcohol, yet Marijuana is illegal and alcohol isn't.

Why is this?

Because the government can't figure out how to turn it into revenue through taxation, it's just too easy to grow it in the backyard.

Hemp would have been too much competition for our industrial companies of the past. Rather than let industrial hemp take them out of business these companies found ways to make pot illegal.
Marijuana also had a lot of racial ties to Mexican and black cultures so politicians of the time decided that it was not good for the white American culture.

You could also find a 1938 Popular Mechanics issue that praised hemp for it's ability to out produce 10 acres of trees to 1 acre of hemp for its paper and textile uses.

Another point that probably aided towards it being illegal when other similar/worse substances are legal, is that they were already too widespread and ingrained in societies for a government to reasonably illegalize them. So many people drink alchohol that most attempts to illegalize it has been disastrous, while the illegalization of less used substances went relatively unnoticed.

They did try to outlaw alcohol and it didn't work. History repeats itself and so I believe that marijuana will become legal in these next years

A lot of people will lose money if it is made legal.

Because Nixon said so.

The most notable would be big pharma.

Prisons and law enforcement agencies pretty significant too I think.

If you watch the PBS or Discovery Channel documentaries on this, you will see that the 1800's were awash in drug use, and so in the early 1900's various Federal legislation outlawed pot along with other forms of dope.

Alcohol was prohibited later with an amendment, which was then repealed.

More people (including myself) wanted booze than wanted pot or dope (never tried it myself).

It does not look like the Feds are going to repeal their pot and dope laws anytime soon. So the states that pass pro-pot laws are still in violation of Federal oversight.

The pot scene seems to be about a 10% to 15% minority. Roughly about the same as the proportion of homosexuals, by coincidence.

Whereas the alcohol scene seems to be closer to a 50% to 75% majority. Roughly about the same as the proportion of Catholics, Protestants, and Jews also by coincidence.

As in all things democratic, the majority normally rules.

So it is never going to happen at the Federal level that pot becomes legalized, in my view.
