Can you be a philosopher without being a professor at a university? Are there any Research or academic Jobs at Universities or facilities that don't involve you teaching?

A Think Tank would seem like a suitable workplace possibly.

There are basically no jobs available, either in universities or otherwise. Philosophy is a dying art, unfortunately.

Go to a good school like UC Berkeley or New York University, get your PhD, and you'll have no problem getting a tenure track position.

Why? No one mentioned it or implied it. The OP only mentioned jobs not careers.

I think Noumena misread "suitable" as "sustainable".

Understandable. It would be appropriate for janetsanders since he wants to be a Christian Apologist. He could consider obtaining jobs at Think Tanks that sponsor research supporting Christian views. Then there are also Christian universities as well he could work at.

The problem is that people get their PhD's in philosophy from sub-par schools, and then fail to get positions in academia because they didn't realize that selection committees were so elitist about what college you went to.

That's unfortunate to hear....It's almost like a club, and if your not good enough they won't let you in:(
