This was in an online exam

________ is considered by many people to play a central role among the sciences.
Answers:
Chemistry
Geology
Physics

Can you answer the question based on reason and current knowledge (without reference)?

Explain your rationale for the answer, and where you might run into trouble when answering...

Physics, as it is what underlines all the other sciences.

Biology. How can we understand what we observe without understanding the organism that does the observing? Duh.

Yep dumb question. But since it was in a course called "chemistry in everyday life" you should have been able to guess chemistry.

True...
Questions with objectively right or wrong answers would have been nice though.

My first answer would Physics, nut i guess it also depends on the class. In my opinion Physics is the base, but I would guess Chemistry with the "central role" phrasing. Still, dumb question.

The Fool: Are you sure your wording is correct, because worded like that of the botched question. Because many, to the highest precision is simply more than two. Or at least that's what A fool once told me.

And "A Central Role", is quite distinct from "The Central Role", Thus leaving it ambiguous.

The only other things I can think of, is that it was specifically Stated in a textbook, from which she derive the question bank, for the exam. Or that it's something she said in class. In these two cases, they would be testing you more on whether or not you were studying the resources they wanted you to study.

Against The Ideologist

But who knows such things anyways.

Perhaps monkeys.
"The bud disappears when the blossom breaks through, and we might say that the former is refuted by the latter; in the same way when the fruit comes, the blossom may be explained to be a false form of the plant's existence, for the fruit appears as its true nature in place of the blossom. These stages are not merely differentiated; they supplant one another as being incompatible with one another." G. W. F. HEGEL

Biology. How can we understand what we observe without understanding the organism that does the observing? Duh.

Without The Big Bang (which deals with physics), there would be no particles, and nothing to form anything biological. So, physics is the answer. Duh.

Without anything to make up matter, chemistry, the Big Bang wouldn't have been successful.

It depends on who the ?many people" are, if they are chemists, then it's chemistry, if they are physicists, then physics, biologists, then biology, and geologists would probably write in "rocks".

Physics is an ACTIVITY that involves observation and experiments. The Big Bang didn't deal with physics. There was no physics in those days. Physics is a consequence of biology. Physics is sooooo subordinate, I actually feel kind of sorry for it.
