I was in an hour long debate about materialism vs dualism, and this point was brought up. I didn't know how to respond to it.

What was his reasoning for asserting existence is necessarily immaterial?

If existence is material, how do you explain the existence of existence in materialism? If you do that, how do you explain the existence of existence of existence? Etc.

Um, by definition existance is material in materialism....

Unless he is arguing 'is the definition immaterial'? To which the answer is 'yes'.

There is no explanation of it, it just is.... By definition.

It's like asking is a 'square necessarily with four sides'.

Thank you. I have just started to get into philosophy (mainly time and materialism vs dualism), and there is a lot to learn.

If idealism alone existed, how would we know that which it is, being we would not know that which it's not?

Word of advice, don't let it interfere with your college and career if you do. Even rational thinker agrees that it's 99% mental masturbation :-p

I am only doing it to give me a reason to stay on DDO. The religion section is broken, the science section is dead (outside of creationism vs evolution or creationism vs abiogenesis), and the history section is somewhat dead.

I am hoping that I can get something out of philosophy here.

Hah, fair enough. It's why I mostly do debates nowadays instead of forum discussions, at least in debates I am guaranteed 6 rounds is sane dialogue. Is your degree in the sciences?

Um, by definition existance is material in materialism....

That hardly means materialism counts as an accurate description of reality, which is what is he asking.

Don't even get me started on accurate descriptions of reality Mr. CTMU lol.

That point is that "by definition existance is material in materialism" amounts to saying "there exists a theory that disagrees with that!".
