I was at a presentation at noon about different ideas of how the universe came to be (why is there something rather than nothing).

The last argument that was presented was that it was due to ethical necessity (due to goodness). The term for this starts with an "a", but I cannot remember what it is called.

Was the "A" word Aquinas perhaps?

Does any of this sound familiar? Perfection is a function of actuality and God"s goodness necessarily invokes the actuality of being, so God"s goodness is explanatory of both origin and end of the universe by necessity. Something like that?

It kind of sounds like they were presenting Thomas Aquinas' views.

If I remember correctly, Plato had an early view of this.

Axiarchism.

You're welcome.

There are modern proponents of this view. (Mainly a lot of theists, but they don't necessarily have to be theists.)

Very interesting! That makes sense to me actually. 'The great attribute of heaven and earth is the giving and maintaining life.' (Book of Changes, Xi Ci II, Chapter 1) The universe is the womb that gave rise to life, so it could be ethical necessity that started the universe!

Yes, that is it, thank you! I wanted to look into it a bit, see what arguments are used in support of it.
