Smith's explanation for why there is something rather than nothing fails for at least two reasons.

1. Smith assumes that something's existence has been explained when its existence is shown to follow from something else which exists. The problem is that until something has been explained in an explicable way, it hasn't really been explained at all. So if we explain this state of the universe by appealing to the previous state of the universe, but fail to explain the previous state without introducing "loose ends", not only have we failed to explain the previous state, we have also failed to explain the current state. In other words, we don't get to move on with the explanation until we can say "Oh, no wonder that exists". If we don't know why something's cause exists, and why the cause's cause exists, etc we don't ultimately know why anything exists.

I've illustrated this point with a diagram: http://imgur.com...

In this example, suspension is equivalent to "inclusion within the universe". Smith would have us believe that 5's defiance of gravity is explained by its connection to 4. But unless it's clear why 4 is suspended, a connection to 4 doesn't help. 5's defiance of gravity doesn't make sense unless we go all the way back to the beam holding up the first square in the sequence (which is analogous to teleology). If 1 is held up in an explicable way, then a connection to 4 would suffice to explain 5's defiance of gravity. But if we don't know why 1 is held up, then a connection to 4 doesn't clear up the mystery.

2. In the same interview, Smith claims that effects don't logically follow from their causes (which I think is accurate). If this is the case, then appealing to something which does cause something to happen doesn't explain why it causes it to happen. If your explanation can't explain why two things are causally connected, then you don't have a true explanation.
