In "Candide" by Voltaire, the protagonist believes that all is for the best, as in everything happens for the purpose of achieving the best possible outcome. For example: noses were made for the purpose of holding spectacles, the best possible outcome.

Thoughts?

I haven't finished it, but I find it to be quite hilarious how persistent he is in his optimism despite how tragedy-after-tragedy befalls him.
