What else would fall under this category besides sensation concepts? And what impact does this "unknowing" have on society? Or is it *completely* irrelevant?

Regardless, "There can't be more to the public meaning of our language than we are capable of teaching to each other." is a groovy concept

The beetle-box can be applied to everything, not just inside sensation. This point was brought forth by by Arif Ahmed in his Critical review of Wittgenstien's philosophical investigations. I've discussed this thoroughly in one of my debates: http://www.debate.org...

Is the beetle in Schoedinger's box alive or dead? ;-)

Suppose in my box I have a colorado beetle and you have in your box a stag beetle. If we started talking about our beetles don't think it would take long for us to realise that our beetles were different. If I started out thinking 'beetle' refered to that thing is my box I would learn that other people think 'beetles' have antlers. To continue using the word 'beetle' my - and your - understanding of the word 'beetle' would broaden. I may only be able to see my own colorado beetle with my physical eyes, but in my 'minds eye' I might start to imagine it as not yellow but solid black, or with horns, or a bit bigger and smaller.

From the single concrete example of 'beetle' in my mind at the start, my conception of what 'beetle' denotes becomes more abstract. After an hour or so I would use the world beetle to refer to the abstraction, not the concrete example. As at any point I would always be using 'beetle' to refer to an internal - but dynamically changing - private model of 'beetle' I feel I am closer to Locke.

Formation of language would also fall under this category. So it could provide insight into linguistics. I think Wittgenstein's point was that there isn't a such thing as the 'unknowing' in society, because we wouldn't be able to speak about it.

Also, I have to post this comic every time the beetle in the box is brought up: http://existentialcomics.com...
