There's different types of memories. There's ones that we can easily recall and others that are lost to us.

If you can't remember it...............wait for it................it's not a memory!

That is not to say it is not stored away in the dark recesses of your mind.
Storage and retrieval are separate processes, memory requires both.

I can go back to about four and a half or five, which seems to be typical, from my casual research.

My first memory was around three and a half: it is very vague, but it was a car trip in Hawiwii. I think we were going up a mountain and I threw up in the car.

well, the older you are, the more you forget about your past.

I clearly remember being put to sleep in my bed when I was 8 or 9 months. That is the farthest back I can remember.

I have no idea how old I was, but my arms still had baby fat. I was crawling on the kitchen floor around a counter loosely holding a tiny tarnished brass rattle. The wood was kind of cheap and had a cheesy 80's finish on it (didn't know that at the time obviously) and the fridge was a slightly yellowish cream, on my right side. The floor I can't recall anymore. I recall being happy, pretty sure I would have been smiling and I crawling at a fair pace, and the rattle I had spiked my curiosity for some seconds but probably didn't compare to my need for speed, and it was discarded.

That's as far as I can remember.

Bingo. This is quite common. For me, it's my mom getting a phone call then starting to cry. JFK had been killed. I was 4 years, 8 months old.

One of my first memories was of a bad dream actually, it was the hamburgler (from McDonald's) but he was missing a leg. I wasn't older than 2.

I was about 9 months old. I was in my crib and my parents and other adults were laughing at me. We moved from that house when I was around 1 and I described the room to my parents.

The earliest memory that I can ascribe a date to happened right around my fifth birthday. There are other things that I remember before then, but I don't remember when they happened.

Yes they can, your "first memory" is the first moment you remember. Doesn't matter the age. Everyone has one.
