Duh. The fact that they didn't admit weeks ago was simply a political scheme to make it seem as though they had it all under control. Clearly they didn't. Nuclear power plants should be shut down...there are absolutely no pros whatsoever to keeping open current plants and/or building new ones. Can anyone provide me with a good reason as to why we do this?

Because it's a relatively safe way of producing electricity with far less environmental harm than most practical alternatives.
Because despite not a new nuclear plant being built in the last 30 years, the United States has never had a major problem with any of it's nuclear power plants.
That being said hopefully fusion power plants become a practical reality in the relative future.

The nuclear plant used in Japan was an old design. The cooling system for the newer design uses passive cooling in cases of a shut-down.

YES! Because of the location of many of the plants, a natural disaster of similar magnitude in the United States, be it earthquake, tornado, etc., could affect hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people. Not only does building a nuclear power plant take upwards of 10 years to complete, it is also the most expensive and dangerous avenue used to create power.  There is still no safe way to dispose of the waste the facilities produce, so it just sits above ground in cooling ponds.

A tornado can't put a dent in a nuclear power plant.

Also Nuclear power plants are built to withstand the worst of natural disasters.
What happened in Japan was a perfect storm. A quake of greater magnitude than though plausible, followed by a massive tsunamis. All this and there is still not a meltdown.
only 3 major accidents to have occurred in over 14,400 cumulative reactor-years of commercial operation in 32 countries.
3 mile island-no one was hurt, long or short term.
Chernobyl-everyone knows that story.
The current one-one guy was killed at the plant, a crane accident.

Joke? it really can't, those containment structures are the strongest man made structures on earth. The extremely rare powerful tornado's can't hurt them.

The 2012 "conspiracy" (it's not a conspiracy, but kind of a twist into a prophacy) is not christian, it is Mayan.

And even then, is still bogus.

Because the Devil spoke to me and said the world is not ending in 2012, he doesn't plan to start his takeover until 2018 and that is only the warmup. We won't even notice until about 2024 and then it will be too late to stop it.

Earthquakes of that size are believed to be literally, like one every several hundred years. Since eastern asia had one just several years prior, it seemed like they'd be in the clear for awhile.

Also note, that the Earthquake did squat to the reactors, it was the following tsunami that did them in (the tsunami wall was only like 18ft high there, not 30 for the wave).

Poorly designed structure =/= bad idea in principle

The fact that a nuclear power plant can be damaged by huge waves is a weak argument against used nuclear power. More reasonable conclusions would be "build a higher wall" or "don't build nuclear power plants so close to the ocean when you know there might be tsunamis."

The nuclear accident has killed no one and is expected to kill no one. The tsunami killed about 25,000. It makes more sense to worry about tsunamis.

A nuclear plant can be designed for any magnitude of earthquake. It was the tsunami that got over a 20 ft wall at Fukushima. More recent designs have better backup power systems, so the disaster wouldn't have happened to a more modern plant. Even so, so one was killed.

I'd like to debate this topic too.
