A 1980's Republican election campaign advertisement boasted that Ronald Reagan had increased public sector workers' pay in order to keep up with inflation "despite stick-in-the-muds trying to stop him". When it was pointed out that the policy was actually initiated by the Democrats and that Reagan had, in fact, tried to block it on no less than three occasions, a Republican spokesman said "Since when have advertisements had to be accurate?"
So, should adverts have to be accurate or should the burden be upon the consumer to exercise due diligence and to check the validity of the adverts' claims?
And should advertisers be allowed to promote any product? Have a look at this advert for instance:
Do you think that advert should be allowed to run or should the Government regulate advertising to prevent such adverts being published?
