Have you ever suspected that your online debating opponent was a deranged violent nutter? I have, but one Norwegian researcher of philosophy suspected no such thing when he engaged in an online debate with the Oslo mass-murderer Anders Breivik. Mr. Breivik seemed perfectly sane and hardly different from all of the other right-wingers on the forum.

Coincidentally, this same philosopher, Lars Gule, has connections to left-wing terrorism, albeit to a much smaller degree and in the distant past.

The Tucson shooter Jared Loughner was a big fan of the radical left-wing online film Zeitgeist, and he promoted his views online.

I am thinking that online debate has a critical role in political action. If you lose an online debate, it will very slightly increase the odds that the winner or an observer will gain the confidence and motivation to take their views to an extreme.

So, win your next debate, or people will die!!!

Not too surprising. Many people like to view the internet as a place where one should have to have "tough skin" (and you do to a point, just like in life), but that "tough skin" (lol, thinking of Stick It jokes) often carries from personal tough skin, to ideaological tough skin, where people isolate their ideas and try to use the internet, not to better themselves and their own ideas, but to hammer others into agreeing with them. Whether they win or lose, this often justifies themselves (if they change someone, they view that as justification, and if they don't change people, they view that there are more morons in the world than they suspected and that they need to try harder). Eventually that "hammer" that they used to hammer ideas across online, becomes an AK-47 and back-pack bomb.

Yes, though you could argue that nutso political murderers are more likely to be one debate sites because they allow the nutsos do discharge some of their politically-oriented anger while remaining isolated from real relationships and being vulnerable.

Also, since murderous nutsos are relatively rare, online would be closest thing to a community of like-minded people that he could get.

lol, we wouldn't use bombs, but biological attacks, spread through un-knowning human sacrifices to manually carry it to you. Ideally, when you need to restock your food or water.

You're posting to the politics forum. The purpose of this forum is to argue over when it is appropriate to kill someone. You're surprised that some of the ideas discussed here have lethal implications for someone?
