In history, many things develop at the same time, and have a direct correspondence with each other. One example is ancient Nubia and Egypt. Through out their history you see them communicating, trading, and warring with each other. One thing that helps us understand ancient civilizations is their development of agriculture. Agriculture and complex(er) society are almost always linked, but what came first, Agriculture, or Complex Society?

In 9500 BC the Neolithic Age started
Around 7000 BC people started living in mud-brick homes
In 3500 BC The 1st cities was built in Mesopotamia
Around 3000 BC writing was first developed in Sumer known as Cuneiform script.
Around 3000 BC trade started between city states

Thus Agriculture gave rise to brick homes, which gave rise to cities, which gave rise to writing and trade.

Thus Agriculture gave rise to complex societies.
