Taliban commander Mohammad Ashan turns himself in for $100 reward
A Taliban insurgent in Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashan, has been dubbed the world's dumbest terrorist after attempting to claim a $100 (£63) reward for turning himself in.
Afghan officials and US soldiers were left perplexed after mid-level Taliban commander Ashan, wanted in connection with two roadside bomb attacks, handed himself over to Western-led authorities.

He was arrested after strolling towards a police checkpoint in the Sar Howza district of Paktika province with a wanted poster bearing his own face and demanding the $100 finder's fee.
After a biometric scan confirmed the insurgent's identity, Specialist Matthew Baker said: 'We asked him, "Is this you?" Mohammad Ashan answered with an incredible amount of enthusiasm, "Yes, yes, that's me! Can I get my award now?"'
Hundreds of 'be on the lookout' posters emblazoned with Ashan's face had been distributed in Paktika province.
But normally the posters have little effect as people are wary of repercussions from both sides for passing on information.
US officials said they still did not know why the Taliban commander had tried to claim his own wanted reward.
'This guy is the Taliban equivalent of the Home Alone burglars,' one said.
'Clearly,' another official added, 'the man is an imbecile.'

When they compared them to the home alone burglars, John Stewart asked if it was because the taliban were idiots or because we loved them in the 90s haha

There was an article about it in "Economist do it with models":

It's a blog by an economist who is incredibly hot.

Headline of the week: "Taliban commander turns self in… for reward on ‘Wanted' poster"

Mohammad Ashan, a mid-level Taliban commander in Paktika province, strolled toward a police checkpoint in the district of Sar Howza with a wanted poster bearing his own face. He demanded the finder's fee referenced on the poster: $100.

I can't help but think that this is a fairly good argument against purchasing power parity, since I would like to believe that it would take at least a four-figure sum to elicit this behavior in an American criminal.

Seriously though, this reminds me of an old interview with the Pakistani Ambassador to the U.S. that I wrote about like a million years ago. When Jon Stewart asked Mr. Haqqani why it was so hard to prevent people from joining the Taliban, he basically said that the Taliban has the resources to take care of them financially more than the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan can, and people are in large part responding to economic incentives:
