The stereotype is grape soda.. The writers actually probably decided to go with orange soda specifically so that the joke would not be perceived as politically incorrect.

I remember Roy saying somewhere on these forums that (and I paraphrase,) "political correctness is the new religious morality for lefists." I agree with Roy.

I was just watching some clips from old tv shows I use to watch... When I saw this one, I immediately thought "OMG that's such a racist stereotype". Obviously it was meant to be funny, and it's an iconic phrase of the 90's, but imagine what people these days would say to that line.

I don't think that was racist at all. I didn't think orange soda was a black stereotype. I thought it was just grape drink, fried chicken and watermelon.

I don't know. I don't really see the reference to grape soda on account of the soda being orange. I guess the stereotype is that black people like all cheap drinks kool aid, grape drink, any kind of soda, pretty much any liquid that is not juice or milk. But, i guess it doesn't just does not seem racist to me.

BS.... States Rights is an obvious reference to the 10th amendment. If what you say was true,Nazi Germany wouldn't believe in segregation because they abolished the Constituent States to create a Unitary State.

The stereotype for grape soda, orange soda, and kool-aide all come from the same stereotype of liking artificially fruit flavored beverages.
Orange Soda is a reference to grape soda, with the fruit changed from grapes to oranges.

Can I just say...

I loved that show. TV might have been mostly lame back then, but at least teen stars weren't busy doing photo shoots for Maxim and trying to figure out how little they could wear in their next music video.

Funny thing is that I didn't see anything racist about that show until someone told me it was racist.

Doesn't change the fact that it's pure BS.

"Transfer:

Transfer is another of the seven main propaganda terms first used by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis in 1938. Transfer is often used in politics and during wartime. It is an attempt to make the subject view a certain item in the same way as they view another item, to link the two in the subjects mind. Although this technique is often used to transfer negative feelings for one object to another, it can also be used in positive ways. By linking an item to something the subject respects or enjoys, positive feelings can be generated for it. However, in politics, transfer is most often used to transfer blame or bad feelings from one politician to another of his friends or party members, or even to the party itself. When confronted with propaganda using the transfer technique, we should question the merits or problems of the proposal or idea independently of convictions about other objects or proposals."
